Keeping the stock frame, yes, but keeping it stock, no.
Up grade drums to discs for better stopping power, perhaps a power rack for easy of steer, ditch the bias tires, hopped up 235 six cylinder or replace with a small 283, 327 V8 & automatic tranny.

My 53 Bellair when I bought it had a Nova sub-frame in it ,It handled allright but nothing special.When I finally decided to change vehicles the one thing that ruined alot of buyers from wanting it was the change to the frame.If you are building a street-rod go with the change,but sounds like your Dad is a smart man and just wants to cruise .
