That's exactly what will happen, i've also seen it happen a bunch of times. Hence the reason im an active member of this place and rarely ever go on that site. Much more friendly group of people over here.

Yep, same as with me and many others here. Every time I read the HAMB I get annoyed, so I try not to go there.

It was hard to belive there was any paint under there.

I found the same on mine as well, areas you thought had no paint had lots! After I had done CLR and the scotchbrite I did some wet sanding with 800 or 600 grit, and it brought even more colour out!

Here is a couple more.

That patina looks great.

Skull, have you clear-coated over patina before? I'm just curious. I had considered doing this, but I have concern that adhesion to the surface below could be an issue after a year or two and then you would in effect ruin the patina below. That's just my thought process. Linseed Oil or Penetrol are supposed to work very well, I might try one of those.

I am gonna try this stuff called Rat Wax. As a matter of fact I ordered it already and just waiting for delivery. A guy told me about it. He has a 57 International that was left outside behind a barn for 30 years. He did the CLR as well and did the Rat Wax and he says it beads water like crazy and also protects flat paint finishes and patina paint. It says that you mix up 50 % destilled water and 50% rubbing alcohol and spray on and wipe it down to get all oil and such off then use Rat Wax. Look it up online and see what you guys think.

haven't cleared my stuff, just wax the heck outta it.

a friend of mine CC'ed his over the patina after a light scruffing with a pad and after 3 years it still looks good but, when he ain't driving/showing the truck sits in garage.

Later

Just my 2 cents snopro.....
I have read many threads on different sites as to clear coating to preserve patina. And not just in relation to rust or weathered paint but to preserve historical pinstripping, signage, ect. The consensus seems to be that CC is not the way to go. Your concerns about adhesion are well founded. And once the CC starts to fail then you have in effect ruined the underlying coating your were trying to protect.
As skull posts it may work for a while on a vehicle that isn't used much. But on a driver, not so much. And do you really want to scuff it to help the CC hold?
Even the use of oil or other things are only going to be a temporary fix. Once the weathering effect starts it seems that nothing short of a complete paint job can stop it. Which is why some paople have taken to painting their vehicles to look weathered.
You built it to drive and do so. As you continue to use it the patina will change but that won't necessaraly be a bad thing.... Just a part of life.

I bought some Rat Wax in the fall and am waiting to try it out. I think it's better suited to something like yours with more of the paint left than mine. I bought the wax and the soap, I didn't remember reading about the rubbing alcohol and water I'll check it out.

Yeah, I'm not worried about the patina changing, and most of the truck won't change anyways. It is garaged, and the large expanses of "surface rust" are no longer active and won't be. My reasoning for looking at other forms of protection is in order to protect areas where "new rust" can form. Places like the hood hinge and things like that.

I just got my tailgate back from my buddy who did a little reconstruction on it

I was gonna leave it bare. Maybe put some pre lube 6 on it to keep it natural like it would be if someone had it fixed. Thought it would look better than a nonmatching patina.

It's not hard to make patina match, and looks better, IMO. If you just leave it, you'll have a rusty metal piece that will look out of place, but again that's my opinion.

If that was done 30 years ago by the trucks original owner they would have sprayed it with whatever green paint they had lying around, to protect it. I made a full roll pan and wheel tubs and made them match sufficiently, I don't think you would have trouble with that piece.

I had my buddy who did the tailgate also try and fix the front bumper. I think it came out real nice. Here are some before and after shots
