[P O.k guys i just started on the comet. after lots of research figuring out the class rules (as best i can) Talking with the guys from Crites,i took the plunge and cut the **** out of this thing.

so far i have the front straight axle, both new front springs, ford 9 inch, c/6 trans 1969 460 ford motor, a bad vintage tunnel ram with a single carb adapter. aluminum slots cheaters for the rear. roll cage from summit.

the car came to me stripped, but included all the chrome, glass, lights, body panels, interior panels and wiring.

came with a buick 455 and auto trans that i sold and came out even on the 460 with c/6 and tunnel ram

so today i was fishing thru craigslist and found a plasma cutter, called the guy went to see it, you should have seen his face when i asked him to plug it in so i could try it(you would have thought i was buying a gun and asking him to load it?0

[;)well anyway it worked and i got it for 200.00 its not a big one but it cuts up to 3/16s metal and has the compressor built in. (since i never used one before i thought i better go cheap n used first then move up). ANYWAY for those who have never cut with one before.... step away from the sawzall and cut off wheels and get one! OMG! it is amaizing to cut with one. and i forone will never cut with out one again.[ddd

so back to the car. i want to do it in a style that one might have seen in 1969 or so at most strips. moving the rear forward 10 inches, the front forward 7 setting the engine back approx 10 to 12 inches, building a glass flip nose front end, using glass doors and front bumper thinking about metalflake red and gold with gold leaf lettering in a wild 1968- 1970's font.

looking for a cool name so any ideas would be great something like panty dropper or some other crazy name HELP ME OUT HERE)[S

Ever see the model AMT put out years ago of a 64 or 65 Falcon, they called 'The Vulture' always thought it was cool. Same body style Merc/Ford.
 
i had a comet back in the day we shoved a a 360 into it and beat the the hell out of it... the cops told me to pull the headlights out and put it on the drag strip......lol ah those were the days.... cant wait to see this build plasmas definatly rule[;)
 
I love Comets, especially Altered wheelbased Comets! Brings back memories of the 60's...:D Keep us posted with pics...[dr.............CR
 
Sounds cool--I have gasser fever lately. Looking forward to see what you've cooked up.

The Plasma cutters are super, but be SURE to do whatever you can to keep the water out of the air supply. Just a little moisture will fry the tip electrode right now! Gets expensive.. If the thing won't fire, and you've got good ground and clean metal to start on--you've burned that part. Also they set things on fire !! I've had to put out lots of things--Seat foam is especially flamable!

Its all fun.

yep plasma cutters are def. worth investing in would hate to go back to cut-off wheels or a sawzall.....
love the idea of an altered comet - they are cool....should i confess to watching them build one on tv (musclecar on spike "altered ego")
anyway i REALLY think you've got the right gameplan -heavy flake red with flakey gold stripes/graphics since the front should be up in the air..how about "nosebleed".....i don't know maybe not:confused:

we will be anxiously awaiting pics/updates [P[P[P[P

heres a few of the comet when it was dropped off, someone was nice enough to strip it completely form and take the time to label and bag most of the stuff yeah baby. heres the motor and trans b4 i tear em down.

wheel wells

since no one makes repop steel rear quarters for this model, i'ma gunna make my own, course i'm cheating but....[ddd

i'm steelin the wells out of the front fender slicing it at the center point and adding 5 inches to the total length. this gives m a good 3 inch radius around the 30 inch cheaters evenly and the rear radius is real close to the original angle.[cl

Generally, A/FX cars were big blocks and B/FX were small block cars. I don't have the exact requirements or the breakdown (lb/cu. in. or whatever method of separating the 2 classes was used).

i love the old slotted mags...my first memories of hotrods included 'em
my first truck had 'em....still got a truck w/some of 'em

thanks bob w. i wish it was in a little better shape, as you can see this is one of those cases where one thing leads to another, i figured since i,m gonna try to make this thing do some pretty healthy wheeeeelies i better go with new 2x3 frame. and not trust the 45 year old metal..

a fellow rodder brought his 1970 cougar up to the shop today so we could measure the floorplans and i think those are the ones i'm gonna weld in, they are almost identical and alot closer than the mustang ones i was thinking about using. and believe it or not cheaper too.[cl
