I'd never...ever....ever keep any of my toys outside in the weather...

OH...wait a second.....I'm starting to wake up.....it's a car, and it's meant to be driven.....and the only place I know to drive a car is outside, and I do drive mine all year long.

Word of caution to the canvas portables, it does not hold up too long with a good dumping of snow. Best FYI to offer, find some long tin 20' x 4' to screw down on the frame before you strtch the canvas over the top. This will offer up a much needed support to the snow and save your canvas and frame from a crushing load. I lost a real nice one 3 years back from 4 back to back squalls. Nothing worst then comming home after work to find everything crushed from the snow load :(
Good luck with the sneaking on the build.:D:rolleyes:

LM, thanks for the words of wisdom. Generally we get a fairly dry snow here because it's so dang cold. Farmer Don has 3 of them set up for several years now and hasn't had that problem. He says the canvas does deteriorate and has to be replaced and the one I'm getting will need canvas replacement probably in a year. If I can find something to provide extra support I will do what you suggest. Seems like good insurance.

Lucky you all up and over there in the NE.
I live on the northern side of the GSL, UT. When we get a good lake effect dumping, it is wet and always more then 12". Ran so far today and possible the first big dump, estimated to be around 24" in the next 24hour spell.

I'm gonna Ospho the surface rust on my Olds and let 'er sit outside this year. May lift it up a bit and put some ground barrier down too. The truck is gonna be tore apart inside this winter.

EDIT: Instead, I just went out and used 3 cans of Gibbs on the entire body. The rust soaked it up fast. I guess I'll see how that weathers. Note, I haven't done anything to this car yet and it sat in a shed for 10 yrs, so this is nothing but Gibbs over heavy surface rust. Looks shiny right now! :)

Thanks Maximo but we don't get snow anymore, at least the kind you are talking about. :D Tornado's however, now that's something we have to contend with even in the middle of winter here in Nashville. I'm much more concerned about them than I am snow. I sure would like to see some descent snow this year. It's been several years since we've had more than a couple of inches at a time.

We had a late spring, a cool summer, and we are now starting in on a early winter. Below average temps all year. I hate global warming - it's cold.

I was working in the shop most of the day yesterday and had the portable Kerosene heater on all day. It's been cold and windy the last week. I think winter is just around the corner.

DMW ... dumb question, but what's the temperature in New Mexico this time of year ? I'm in Ontario, Canada and we've had the bay doors open at the shop where I work most days this week.

You'll probably laugh. Here at the house the highs have been high 40s low 50s and 10-20 mph winds, lows in the low 20s to 30s. But we are at 6800 feet altitude. ABQ is at 5000 feet and a good 10 degrees warmer.

Was around 20 Celcius ( 68 Farenheit ) most of last week here. Had snow this morning, though. That 68 degree mark last week was VERY unseasonal; it's usually around 45 this time of year. Explains why I've had the flu for three days; temperature's been up and down like an elevator. Another dumb question: you ever get snow ? I always figured old vehicles survived well in your state because of the climate.

Snowed this morning, second time this year so far. We'll get 2-3 storms a year with 2-3' of snow most time only a couple of inches. Where we live we get ~16"-18" a year precipitation. ABQ gets 8"-9" and we're only 20 miles away. Normal humidity most of the year is ony 10-15% so really dry air. Cars will get surface rust but not rust away. They use sand/gravel on the roads in the winter not salt.

Southern part of the State is totally different. Much lower, hotter and drier.

DMW, sounds like the place to be. Being Canadian a little snow never bothers me. A LOT of snow, well now that can be a different story. Our old stuff around here has pretty much rotted away. I don't mind warm, I HATE hot, dry is nice, and old iron laying around is even better. Is your state picked over or are there still bargains to be found behind garages and in barns ?

Mucho, mucho. Southern Colorado is the same. It's every where. Finding ones that want to sell for a fair price, well that's a whole 'nother story.

Check out this post of one guy about 10 miles from here and his stash of rust free old iron. Warning this is not for the weak hearted. None of this is for sale. A friend of his has been trying to buy a 34 Ford from him for 35 years, no luck!

I know of at least 3 other yards close by not as big though. Some for sale most not, $2500-$5000 for non-running vehicles.

A close friend of mine keeps telling me about all the cars his grandfather-in-law has and he won't take me out there. Some friend!
