I've been searching, but not finding the info I want. I picked up a '50 3800 that has been converted to 12v with an alternator. Do I need to worry about battery specs when picking a battery or just find one that fits in the compartment? Also should I be looking into a battery switch or just keep the battery on the tender and mount it when I want to listen to the 235 turn until I get it in full running order?

There are two different types of batteries, cranking and deep cycle. You want a cranking (starting) battery. Deep cycles are used primarily in things like boats and other applications where accessories are running for long periods and will wear down a battery.

I would simply buy one that has 680-1000 cranking amps and that will fit in your box. The most common one is a group 24 that measures something like 7 x 10.5 x 10 inches tall. I have used that size in almost every car I have had, and am even starting my 331 stroker with one.

A good rule of thumb is to double the cubic inches and use that as a minimum cold cranking amps. Going larger won't hurt anything, but going smaller will result in a no start when you need it most.

But Don pretty much spelled it out.
