I got to thinking about things my Father taught me.

1. Never, ever lie. If you lose trust, you'll never get it back.
2. If you have a job to do, do it now and get it over with.
3. God gave you a brain, figure it out.
4. Put things back where you got it from. You'll never lose it.
5. Do the job the best you can.
6. Only girls cry.

Once, when I was 7 or 8, my Father was adjusting the brakes on his '49 Ford. He didn't have a wheel block so he had me stick my legs against the bumper and my hands on the ground to hold the car. I slit my hand open on a piece of glass so I got up to go get a bandage. My Dad asked where I was going so I showed him my hand. My Dad said, "What are you? A girl! Get back here and finish what you're doing!". After the job, my Dad took me inside the house, held my hand over the sink and poured iodine on the wound. My Dad said, "You'd better not cry! Only girls cry!".

He really hated it when I grew my hair long in the early '70's........(LOL)

dad has a few sayings i like, i'll share a couple here, if that is ok....

it's easier to spend a dollar than to make one...

any job worth doing is worth doing right...

and one that the US govt. needs to comprehend:
you cannot borrow your way out of debt...

and one i always hated as a kid, and not real fond of today...

there is always work that needs to be done...

to all the dads, HAPPY FATHER'S DAY[cl[cl[cl[cl

A few things my father told me (that actually stuck),

- Nothing in this world is free. You have to earn it.
- Never start a fight, but make sure you can finish one.
- A man's only as good as his word.
- When you make a deal, you shake hands. (And firmly son, not like a girl).
- Respect your elders
- Change your oil
- Wash that road salt off
- We drive Chevys in this family

If we got sent home from school for fighting, my Mom would freak. All my Dad would say is, "Did you win?".

He once got jumped by a gang when he was young. He got beat pretty good. Anyway, he went looking for the guys in the gang. One, two or three at a time, he found them. Stores, movies, etc........he tracked them down. Finally, the leader of the gang called a truce and they never bothered him again.

Growing up, we lived in East L.A.. One night, my Dad came home and was jumped by 3 muggers. After he sent them to the hospital, my Mom got mad and told him he was getting too old for that nonsense.

Taking martial arts, if my Dad thought we didn't try hard enough, we got flipped all over the place on concrete, no mats!

"Don't be stupid."
And if I did something stupid:
"Well, I hope you learned something."
That pretty much covered everything.

Thanks Dad.

I've mentioned before the most important lesson my Dad taught me.......never to smoke. He was a heavy smoker from the time he was 13 and died at 47 when I was 11, of a heart attack. When I was a kid he would want to play ball with me but his chest would start hurting and he would have to sit down. He would say "I don't care if you are 50 years old, if I EVER see you with a cigarette I will break your fingers."

Not having him around when I was growing up left a real hole in my life, and I wish he could have been around to know my two Sons. He would have loved them. :(

Good or Bad they are still your Dad....

Mine left when I was 12..... didn't see him again until I was 29..... he had a new family ready made from his new wife... our relationship was never more than a few phone calls each year at holidays.....when his wife died he was alone...(new family abandoned him after their mom died...he called and I went to be with him....when he knew his time was near, he called me and asked if I could come to AZ and be with him... I went.....no matter what...he was still my Dad.....I hated what he did but loved him...... wish it had gone another way but you play the hand you are dealt.....
