They used to do that here allot in the mid west US, but not so much anymore when the car craze and anything rusty craze like mentioned in the "Pickers" thread. Hard to find stuff like that anymore just abandoned. Years ago, I remember being able to approach and old farmer and ask, and he would be HAPPY to give you an old car just to get it out of the way.
I built a 49 GMC rod years ago, from a farm find. It was actually being used as a chicken coup. The old guy didn't want to sell it, because he just would say, "I can't sell it. My chickens live in it..". I offered him $500 for it and he just said "no.. my chickens use it as a coup.. I can't..." So, I then offered him $400, and I would build his chickens a new coup myself. Only then after some thought would he agree to let me have that truck.. lol.. Those were the days..
