For a couple of years now I've been thinking about having a big photo contest on here, but by the time I get around to it, it's half way through the year. This year I thought of it at the beginning of the show season. So starting May 3rd, I will post the Official Photo Thread and the Official Rules Thread. This will be a 5-6 month long contest with several parts and 3 cool prizes in the end, so there will be a lot of rules. Don't worry, simple rules that follow the RRR motto - "Be nice, it's not that hard", so RRR members won't have a problem with them.

HOW IT WILL WORK:
Did I say 5-6 months long? Yep! Each month will be one round that's like a small contest in itself. The winner of that round will choose the subject matter and be the judge for the next round. The judge will choose 10(?) pics from all the months entries, and those pics will be put into a poll to be voted on by everyone. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place entries for each round will be be put in a poll at the very end of the contest for a final vote. Contest over. Prizes awarded.

PRIZES:
Since I don't have anything in hand yet, I'll just say I plan to spend well over $100 just for 1st prize, so you know I expect some well thought out pics.

In a bit I'll explain more and give a preliminary list of rules. Right now, I gotta do some stuff for the Missus!

RULES:
Tomorrow I'll make an Official Rules Thread that I can link to every time someone fails to follow them. But, today, this will be the start.

THOSE allowed to participate:
Any one that is a RRR member as of May 3rd 2016. (Even me)
or
Anyone with at least 50 posts. (To make sure we don't have problems from outsiders)
except for
Professional photographers. (This is a amateurs only contest, so if you have made money from taking photos, you are out. Sorry.)

Of course, you won't be able to enter a pic into a contest you are the judge of.

GENERAL submission rules:
Each round of the contest will have it's own Picture Submission thread. Only one pic per person per round will be accepted. If you submit more than one, only the last one will be used. So don't post pictures in that thread asking which one to submit, etc. If you post more than 3 pics in one round, NONE WILL BE ACCEPTED - don't pic hoe the contest.

Pictures must be no larger than 1,000 pixels on either side. Nor any smaller than 500p on one side. For example, if you wanted a panoramic style shot it could be 300 tall by 1000 long or say 500 tall by 200 wide, but not 700x1200 or 400x200. Get it?

All submissions should be in JPG format. I may expand that to other formats if need be.

A cut off date and time will be posted for each round. No entries will be accepted after that time. The post time in the upper left corner of a submission post will be used to decide when it was submitted.

CONTENT:
No profanity, vulgarity, people or pets. (Spectators in the background at a car show or a sneaky cat in the corner of the pic is OK. A dog, child, or wife sitting in a truck is not. Get it?)

No photos that have been submitted to other contests or other rounds of this contest.

Limited photo editing will be allowed:
Rotating
Cropping
Brightness
Contrast
Hue
Saturation

The only other two things allowed are Black/White and Sepia.

Anything else is not allowed. No borders, captions, image manipulation, individual color adjustment, or use of filters, etc.

I will be in charge of deciding what counts as a eligible submission per the above posted rules. The judge (previous rounds winner) will decide which of those eligible entries will be in that rounds poll of 10. Any RRR member can vote. Everyone will get one vote in the poll. Voting for your own pic will get it disqualified! The top 3 will be entered in the final poll after all the rounds.

THERE WILL BE NO COMPLAINING about why your pic didn't get chosen over another by the judge! The judge has an opinion, and since he won the position, his opinion counts, yours doesn't. Respect that.

The same goes for my decisions or anything else. If there becomes too much butt hurt I will shut the contest down and keep the prizes for myself.

Constructive criticism and helpful suggestions are welcome of course.

JUDGING:
I was going to allow the winner to have free range as to what the next rounds criteria was, but I think I will limit that to a list to choose from. That way there won't be problems with inclusiveness. (I can't have someone decide to have the subject be "chopped 32's with Hemi's" - most of us don't have quick access to one for a photo shoot.

The first round will be open and I will be the judge.

Composition
The shop, tools, anything with wheels. (Bikes, Cushman's, wagons, whatever)

Pre65, ratty, rust, etc. will get preference. If it doesnt fit the vibe of RRR i will nix it. Even though RRR has a muscle car section, that's not really what it's about. Shiny z28 - no. ratted out Celica, sure - but don't be surprised if it still doesn't get chosen.

Blurring license plates, house #'s, profanity, etc is OK.

Pics could have been taken by you any time. 30 years ago - cool.

Same and nearly identical shot will be nixed. If you move the camera 2 inches and make it black and white, it's still the same shot. If you copy someone else's idea - that's permissable. Maybe not ethical or original, but OK.

Each round may have additions or subtractions to the rules as needed. They will be posted at the top of the current round and will not change until the next round.

I will have instructions and helpful suggestions
for judges.

Just in case this runs into some unforseen problem, I reserve the right to not give out any prizes at all.

Question for you Sam:

How are we going to post the pics? Using the board upload, or posting a linked pic from a photo sharing site such as Photobucket or Flicker? I don't know if the board software automatically resizes pics or not, I think it can be done on Photobucket.

Either way is OK with me. What ever works. I'm not going to get into that side of it since there are so many different phones and OS's. It'll have to be up to you all to figure out how to get your pictures submitted and in the correct size. I do know most phones have the simple editing features I am allowing and there are a few online photo editing sites that will too, including resize. I don't even care if some emails their entry to some else for resizing, as long as that is all they do. And the owner is the one that submits it. I realize there are some less than tech people here, so helping them out is cool.

I do suggest everyone keep a copy of their originally sized pic because at the end I might want to make a calendar from the winners.

Yeah, kinda Soltz. It should be a fun challenge amongst friends. I don't want to get caught up in a bunch of rules, but I also don't want some outsider or a pro coming in and gaming the system. Or have a a bunch of hurt feelings because people feel like they didn't get a fair chance.

Hey fellas, there are easy to follow Quick Rules at the top of the contest page. This contest is for amateurs like you.

Most of the detailed rules are just so we don't get into problems with people being offended or people cheating.

Just think of how bad this contest could get on other car sites!
