I bought a Drill Doctor 20 years ago and haven't bought a new drill bit since. I have a couple of full drill indexes and lots of single loose bits. In the beginning, I sharpened every bit I had. I filled my indexes and stored all my single bits in one of these......

So, whenever a bit gets dull, I throw it in a box to get sharpened later and grab a fresh bit from storage. And, I drill a lot of holes!

Also, I use one of those router speed controls with my die grinder. Works great when porting heads. I don't see why it wouldn't work with a drill press.

I don't know what kind of DP you have but I fabbed up a slow speed conversion for my older Craftsman drill press. Built it 8-10 years ago and it works great. I can get it down to about 175rpm. Here's a write-up I did on it.............

Hey Turbo

Thanks for all that.... nice job on storing the bits and that's awesome write up on the drill press. I think I will try the speed control unit first and if it doesn't work give that a go.

Thanks again for all the detail.

I've had great luck with these Dewalt Pilot point bits. They start with very little to no walking and the pilot point makes it cut easy.
I get the 29 piece Cobalt bits on Amazon for $99
I also get the 29 piece HSS bit's on Amazon for $55
The itanium bits aren't very good.
I've had the kryogenic frozen bit's and don't care for them. They are too brittle.

Those are basically the bits I have been buying... I'm going to go with the sharpening and see how I make out. I definitly going to snag Turbo's bit storage system.

BTW....Did you decide against that stiffener we talked about?

No, I will be cutting it tomorrow for you.
Been very hecktic around here for the last two weeks and also been LS'n a 93 Blazer for a customer.

Anyone running something like this on any of your tooling?

Wonder if this would control speed on my drill press.... it says its good up to 15 amps on a motor with brushes....

I do have a wall mount reostat on my exhaust fan cause it moves a lot of cfm and is noisy as hell at full speed but it didn't last long....

This will work on your drill press IF the motor can be run at variable speed. On some electric motors it just degrades the life of the motor.

Does your drill press not have the ability to change speeds by changing the belt position? Mine does and it works well.

I have seen using a motor control and the motor got hot. Figure if the voltage drops the current will increase causing the heat and could burn the motor out.

On the drill sharpening, youtube has a lot of diy drill bit holders for sharpening bits on the grinder at the correct angles. Jim

Years ago I did some thing similar but easier. One night my dad and I were sitting around drinking beer and looking at the drill press. The subject of reducing speed. I came up with a second motor for a shaft for the reduction pulleys. I cut a plate to mount both motors side by side that bolted to the original motor plate. I then wired both motors to a switch to select one or the other and then to an on off switch. this way I could select the motor closest to the spindle for high speed or the other for high speed.

I always drill a pilot hole & use cutting fluid & that really helps keep bit wear down. I can sharpen bits but I'm about 50-50 when it comes to that & typically resort to buying new ones after I butcher the old ones!

BoB

Yeah pretty much me too. Sometimes it may take a few tries. Other times I have to walk away from it.

Noticed a few have mentioned the cutting oil-is that any better than straight motor oil? [S After oil changes (or adds) I've always turned the can upside down and let it sit a while until everything is out. That goes into the 'ol squirt can which I use when drilling something with any thickness...

I've been keeping my eye open for a drill press with that 3rd jack shaft on it and have seen a few for cheap money......but boy they go quick. I don't think the one I have is worth putting that work into.
