well i dug the crush up of the snow last week cause i felt bad for her.
i parked it in the shop and didnt think another thing about it till i went out there today and what the heck...

i know this isnt the site for shiny paint but ....

made ya look didnt i?

seriously i've seen a few pep's on here asking about patina and wethering your paint and lettering so i thought i'd put up a step by step on how my dad taught me. AND what a better canidate than that way to shiny orange crush'd rat i got out back.

my plans are to weather the bottom of the cab and the bed to give it that ol delivery truck look. i will also be adding letters to the doors and some stripes later all to be weathered to match the FAKE RUST.

for this look you will need earth tones, rust, and vintage primer tones.

YELLOW to simulate rust bubbles

RED OXIDE to simulate the ol lacquer primer used on repairs of the past

DARK GRAY OR BLACK to simulate more deep areas of rust.

i added some CAMO GREEN to contrast with the orange on the cab and it will blend with the teal on the stripes and shades on the door lettering.

basically you will need to study a few pics of ol rusty cars to get the ideas of where they rust the most.
tops of fenders, headlight buckets, roofs, and around chops, and then study the more rot out areas along the bottoms these area's are usually darker.

also some cars will have "rust runs" coming down from the wondow's body lines and other fixtures.

to start if your car has paint(whats that right) give it a rub with wax remover. tape off any areas you dont want paint.

start with the yellow, you will use a spray bottle, add yellow paint, either dirrectly from a spray bottle or from a can and thin accordingly.

next i added the dark brown splattered on the same way. and followed with the camo green,

there is a reason you are splattering this on. when you splatter paint on it is very thick and un even, later when the final colors are sprayed over and wet sanded thes "high spots" will come thru and give you the rust you are looking for. check out these first pics for reference.

next up

next up i splattered on some dark brown,

remember not all of this will show thru, if you get a few runs just use a rough sponge i usually tear a new sponge to get the rough edge or use a sponge called sea sponge its what is used when sponge painting with oils or other mediums.

now i used some camo green

remember to consintrate your spray or sponge along the edges or area's that you think would be most effected by rain, sun and the elements, to cause rust.

splatter away. dp1

and then and then

in this next step i added the darker colors.

these colors are in the areas of the most heaviest rust.

dark brown, dark grey and black.

and then spayed on the red oxide primer over everything.

i also dusted a light coat over the entire area from front to back, this will give the orange a old faded "thin look" like years of wash and wear does, when finish sanded.

remember this is called reverse painting where the colors under (or applied first) will not be covered up at the end of all this.

now

after letting the paint cure for about 2 hours.

i went over the whole area with 600 grit wet sand paper, i add a couple drops of dish soap to the water to make the paper slide better.

i sand in small circles and dont use a sanding block it will rub thru any high spots and expose bare metal and then you'll have real rust...

also if you want the "rust run" look coming down from a morror or a door lock ect, sand in an up or down motion. this will create steaks in the finish paint and give the illusion of rust running down from an object.

whats nice about this is if you sand too much off you can go back and add more paint, and nobody can say you did it wrong cause every car rust's different.

heres a few after about 10 mins. of wet sanding. i might go back and darken the areas right around the edges of the doors where the paint would have been worn from in and out of the driver. but up next will be the lettering.

a little Ol lettering

happy new year every one!

started the lettering on the door panels,

first centered and layed out the design,

used 1/4 fine line and good quality masking tape.

added dark rust, yellow and red oxide colors from my spray bottle again, this will appear as rust bubbles when done.

and..

then added the base color coat, its a green/blue color like on the original labels.

removed the paper,

sanded with 600 grit wet, after paint had cured for about an hour.

taped off to start on the lettering, some use frisket paper. i was just out and its new years day so, masking tape it is.

cut the letters out with very light pressure it doesnt take much to go thru the tape, it doesnt matter here as much as on those,(shiney cars).

i airbrushed an antique white ,as opposed to a pure white to help in the aged look.

peelin tape

removed the paper and tape after about 20 min's. of dry time. pulling at a 90 degree angle helps to not remove the new paint.

next i got out my trusty little kafka high lighter brush and added some shadows to the lettering.

then i added the little "crushy" dude

and ice cold at the bottom

and the number to call. lol.

next i added the vintage phone number on the bottom(well kinda but with a twist).

now after it cures overnite(one shot takes awhile to cure) i will age the whole thing letters and all to mach the rest of the truck by wet sanding with 600 grit until i get the look i want. hope you enjoyed it so far, i will post finished picks up sunday.

i am also going to put some cabonated bubbles, up the pillars, in irredesant pearls over the metalflake so stay tuned for that.

now go paint something! dp1
