engine starts but wont run

Please understand that I don't want to trash you or your car, but judging from the engine pics, I have to ask what kind of condition the engine is in, looks like it's had a hard life...
I'm wondering how good the compression is, has it been seriously overheated, is it a high miler?
How good is the ignition - is it a points type distributor (maybe needing adjustment or replacing) or electronic?
Just thinking there may be more going on here than just the carb....[S

It has points and was running before the trans swap. It did sit a few months though. I'll check the points later today.

OK messed with the idle screws and points and stays running but wants to die when I put it in gear its never ending problems now I hear a rattling from the trans. Any suggestions on why it wants to die when put in gear thanks for the help guys
