I have a vehicle for sale on my local craigslist and within 2 days I got 4 of the ol "I am sending you a certified check.....deal with shipper....send balance to...." bullcrap. It's ridiculous. My area listing is so small that only about 10 items are posted per day. These guys are like sharks.

It look like the scam that I heard about many time and was tried on me one time. They send you a money order or certified check for more then the value and ask to send the different back to them or the shipper. They get the item and you got a letter from the bank that the money order or certified check is no good. Your off the item and have to pay the money back to the bank. Ebay Had some notices on this a couple of years ago.

When it come to money order or certified check make sure they clear before you do anything. They are counterfeiting them.

Take it to your bank ask them to contact you when it clears from the point of origin. Then if it clears send the item.

Put the money in the bank until it clears. A lot less problems.

If the person does not agree with that then you will know whats up.

Pmo!

Yep... this is an old scam!!! Most people don't know that cashier's checks can be fake & worthless and are not "good" funds. There is one way to fix this problem.... ask for a Postal Money Order. You have to pay *CASH* $$$ to Uncle Sam... scammers will not send a PMO!!!

Ufortunatly postal money orders can be counterfeit also, there was a boat load of these about a year ago..my credit union would not accept them for about 6 months, had to go to the post office to get them cashed. Fortunatly I didn't end up with a bad one.

That's why you can't beat good old cash..

There's a motorcycle parts store, here in town. They took in a hundred dollar bill. They used a "counterfeit pen" and it passed. The owner of the store went to the bank to deposit his receipts. The hundred dollar bill came back counterfeit. The store owner complained to the bank clerk that the bill was checked with a counterfeit pen and it passed. The bank clerk said, "It's a VERY good counterfeit!".

Nowadays, I prefer checks or cashiers check and do not release the item until the money is in my account.
