Just starting a '37 plymouth project and was wondering if anyone knew what frame option would be the best?? Ive heard a lot of ppl putting mustang and camaro frames under theirs and didnt know if they would work for this...thanks in advance!!

frames

well, camaro and nova's don't have frames, they are uni-body cars with a sub-frame attached. mustangs are a complete uni-body and no frame.

l attached a 1977 nova sub-frame to my pilothouse dodge truck and it works great. just make double sure its square and welded safely by a person who has done frame work before.

Later

Yea sub-frame is what i was talkin bout sorry...so really anything would work if you can make it fit right? Puttin the body on somethin solid is out of my level of experience so id take it to sombody who know what there doin...just need to know what options r best...

S-10

S-10 frames are very popluar. lots of info on the web.

there are some who have threads here on it and the HAMB has some good info. doing a complete swap may be easier than sub-framing it.

also there are several kits to adapt a MII to the existing frame.

do lots of research and talk to people in your'e area who have done this type of stuff.

do you like a straight axle front-end or a IFS style?

for the rear-end are ya planning to run a leaf, coil-over shock 4-link set-up or trailing arm style?

they all handle & ride different, so personal chioce is usually what most people base this on, unless it must be old school for the shows you want to enter. if you plan on running fenders, then the suspension won't be seen and the 'PERIOD CORRECT" look isn't so important except if that what ya really want.

Skull, the 1977 Nova stub is too wide for a 37 Plymouth. I used one for my 40 Pontiac and it's too wide by 1" to 1 1/2"
A 67 to 69 Camaro would be better it's narrower by that much.

l knew they were a little bit different due to the rear-steer VS front-steer steering box location, but l didn't know excatly how.

thanks for the info[cl

frames

ok, thanks for all the info guys it sounds like i need to do a lot more research than i already have. Skull, as far as all the options on the rear end ect...really havent thought about it entirely, i dont even have the car yet but i figured the first thing to do is give it something solid to sit on and go from there...ive raced circle track cars and built those but this will be my first rod build and just lookin for a good place to start and all the help i can get from experienced guys (and girls)...there isnt many people around here that are doin these kinda builds so RRR might be my only resource!! Thanks again fellas and ill keep everyone posted on whats goin on (pics coming soon)!!!

hey skull, can u give me any links to a good website that has some of this info i could look up? Thanks!

what kind of race car? l raced stock body class for years on a 3/8 oval.

l have seen many of the modified style race car 3 & 4 link style rear-end suspension used very successful on the street. l seen the whole chassis set up under a 29-31 model at good-guys. he just removed some of the roll cage to make a 2 seater but, it still had the outer cage around the seats.

also search in fav links here. l put in a ton of links [cl

I'm not a fan of sub-frames but some guys have had success using the front frame from an S-10 because it's pretty narrow...

Stock MOPAR suspension is a good setup... you can do disc brakes if you want... they were used right up until 1956 when the torsion bar front came out. the steering is ver light especially when used with a stock diameter wheel so power steering is a necessity...

The big thing is to rebuild the king pins and trunnions so the car steers and rides right... but no one doing a sub-frame swap would ever use old parts either, would they?

nah....

I raced hobby stock wich is pretty much a low budget class. Could be a uni body car but had to have a full frame under it monte carlos and cutlass were pretty popular wich is what i ran...the motor was all pretty much limitless just had to be a 2 throater carb with a cast intake, no headers and 9:1 comp. ratio (so i guess pretty limited actually) we clocked the fastest guy at 90mph around a 1/2 mile track (took a lot of motor) we always ran 6500-7000rpm by the time we hit the corners, usually ran a set of 383's in the rear end, but played with that a bit....

I checked out a few of those website skull, and they were very helpfull thank you!! After you said somethin about using old mod chassis with a 4-link my mind started spinnin:D!!!! GREAT IDEA!!! Why didnt I think of that[S...think i might go with an indepentent front end then too for the performance factor and beef up the driveline...wouldnt mind puttin a few more ponys in front of her for a trip to the strip from time to time:D:D!!!!! THANKS AGAIN!!!
