1/2 inch to the left of the speedometer would look right to me. It would also make it look like it is important.the copper looks great. You might want to find a place for a temperature gauge. Not sure where you could put it though and have it look right.
Butter. Right? Not margarine.Good point guys - but I guess I should have also included - I just threw these gauges into the holes for now - not sure which one will go where yet. I'd collected these 70's era Auto Meter gauges from a donor car, and have some extras. I don't think I'll use the vacuum gauge, and the temp gauge has the thermocouple on it, so it was an easier mock up with the vacuum gauge.
I'd turned the copper myself with skinny piece of plywood chucked in my drill press. It took me longer to lay out the grid on a piece of cardboard than it did to turn the copper. That and the copper was a piece of leftover from a copper range hood I'd built for the kitchen. (I knew I'd kept those pieces for a reason ) My next question is whether or not to patina the copper. Believe it or not, my wife and I used butter to patina the kitchen hood, and it turned it a really nice antique brown colour.
