I have a NOS box heater for my F1. Came with a cheap looking switch with a resistance coil on top to make several speeds for the fan motor, BUT big warnings not to use in dash and to keep 5" from anything else. Right! So I'm looking for some sort of electronic or internal resister switch to do this that can go in the dash. I've been all over the internet and to all the usual electric sources. Anyone got an idea? Thanks!

Because of the heat generated by lowering the voltage on the single speed motor, you may consider a heat shield of some sort. Most modern motors just have seperate windings to control the speed. The amp draw is what makes it difficult to find a replacement switch.May try a DRL(daytime running lights)resistor. Not positive what the max amp draw is.Would give you a hi/lo.

backside is warm

The backside of don's switch does get hot It was made to mount on the bottom flange of your instrument panel and had plenty of air circulation . If you try to mount one in the panel it needs to have some clearance away from other wires , ducting etc,
