As I mentioned in Tripper's scorcher thread, we've had ripe conditions for extreme weather. Sure enough, we got some.

I collected a few pics, some amateur, some professional.

If you have pics of flood, fire, hurricanes or twisters from your area, post 'em. Or not, if you think this thread "blows". :)

the pros say that a lighting bolt is only 1" in dia. but every time i see one it looks like it is 2' to 4' in dia.

Ha! I'd think the bolt in the last pic is considerably thicker than my thumb!

That reminds me of what I would consider a near death experience. Bear with me if you will, this is a true story...

When I was a teenager, some friends and I were crossing a lake in canoes and got caught by a fast moving storm. We could see it coming, but we were in no man's land. No place to hide and a good distance from any shore. So we pick up the pace but the storm catches us quick and a lightning bolt hit the water, I'm guessing, about 50' from us. Awfully damn close anyhow, and it hammered the surface like a cannonball. (I believe that one was a touch thicker than 1'' as well. :D)

Everybody instinctively jerked their paddles out of the water, (like that makes any difference) and we all looked at each other in sheer horror.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: Six teenagers instantly maxxed out on adrenaline, the paddles went back in the water and I'm sure we got those canoes up on plane. :D Lightning continued to strike the lake, but nobody pulled their paddles again. We made it to shore and hid under the canoes until the fury passed. (Thank God, the canoes were fiberglass) Now everybody was soaking wet, but I guarantee you, our pants were wet with more than rain water.

I love a good storm too, but I prefer to watch, not participate!

I'm probably older than many of you, but I remember "dirt storms" here in Texas back in the 50's. Sometimes it was so bad that dirt drifted into 6 and 8 foot drifts around fences and buildings. Yep, those were the good old days.

I had a similar lightning experience. I was driving down this road and about 50 feet behind me a lightning bolt hit the pavement in exactly the spot I had been in just seconds before. It sounded like a bomb went off and I could see this huge fireball coming out of the pavement in my rear view mirror.

I've been caught out in a boat in a lightning storm and one time we were anchored under a bridge to stay dry and we saw about 4 or 5 water spouts churning in the bay in front of us. I got scared and made a run for it, and one of the waterspouts caught the front of the boat and for a few seconds I had no control over where it was taking us. We made it to a dock that we sat under for shelter and there was a pelican sitting on the post next to us the whole time, and he wasn't going anywhere either.

Not much water in the air here to make rain, sometimes we just use dirt.

:eek: Holy crap on both accounts! Maybe your ex ordered the first one? If that's the case, haha! You missed!

I don't think there's a worse place to be than on a body of water....well, maybe golfing on a hilltop. :D

Hmmm. I think I'd turn that ship around!

Here's another one from a couple years ago. A certain AC/DC tune comes to mind...

Years ago we were heading back to town from the lakes (reservoirs) in the mountains and i was trying to stay ahead of a thunderstorm right on our tail. As soon as we made it to the hot valley the storm stopped and piled up as they normally do. The downpour actually reversed and went up and over the face of the mountain.
It rained up. Awesome to see.

Thunder struck!!

I was caught
In the middle of a railroad track (Thunder)

And I knew there was no turning back (Thunder)
My mind raced
And I thought what could I do (Thunder)
And I knew
There was no help, no help from you (Thunder)

Sound of the drums
Beatin' in my heart
The thunder of guns
Tore me apart
You've been - THUNDERSTRUCK!
