Had my debit card hacked.Fortunately I had no money in the account (seldom do) and the bank caught it. I knew it didn't work once when it should have, then I was at the drive up and they asked me to come inside. There was a whole rift of attempts, including one for $514 but most were small amounts. Lots in Great Britian, which is an automatic red flag to the bank.
They told me to never use it online. I think I only used it maybe 3 times in a couple months (online) One was Summit racing, another to buy my daughters airline ticket and Speedway Motors.
they also told me if I use a debit, the deal is done and there isn't any protection like with a credit card, no way you can do a chargeback.

I have never been a thief, but if I was, that would be my luck. Steal someone's identity, get arrested for being that person, and go to jail for a crime they commited, maybe even sued for divorce from their ex wife, and taken for everything I owned. Bitten by my own dog, for being a stranger..... hmmm.
There is a country song in there somewhere.

Haha, that's what I say. My protection against identity theft is to have one that nobody would want. They could never get more than a couple hundred bucks because that's about the most that's ever in that account.

That really sucks, I have had it done to me. About 8 years ago I ate lunch every day at a restaurant next to my job. I would read the newspaper while I ate and when I left I would toss the newspaper and the receipt for my lunch in the trash can outside the place.

One Saturday I withdrew some money from my bank account and noticed the balance was a little low, like $ 500 low ! So when I got home I opened my bank statement (which I hardly ever did) and found a raft of charges for long distance calls, a hotel stay, pizza delivery, chinese food, and other stuff I never ordered.

Monday morning I went to the bank and the manager pulled up my account and found that over a two day period someone had used my debit numbers to stay at a hotel, order food, and spend about $ 500 of my money. This was back when receipts showed your complete debit card number, not just the last 4 digits. The bank reversed the charges and gave me a list of where the money was spent.

Long story short, I went to the hotel and they had a copy of the girls drivers license, which they gave me. I called the Pizza shop ($50 in pizza) and the Chinese place ($50 there too) and they remembered delivering the food because she tipped them $ 20 each ! I put together a thick file with all this stuff and took it to the Cape Coral Police Dept and the officer there said "Oh yes, we are very familiar with her !"

But 6 months later, after me calling pretty often, they still hadn't done anything with it and basically told me it was too hard to prosecute and the States Attorney would not take the case, even though the Pizza shop, Chinese restaurant, and hotel were willing to testify.

That, my friends, is why people do this stuff. Nothing happens to them. But I bet if I ever Jaywalk I will do time.

Me too.

My debit card got hit 3 years ago for $3001.00 from Germany. The bank said they were using a program that ran random numbers. It took the bank 10 days to put the money back in my account. They attempted to hit me again for $1000.00 from China while my account was suspended waiting on the reimbursement.:(

I went to a credit union and set it up so I have to use a PIN number! Little bit of a hassle because some places don't have a keypad. I just go somewhere that does.....I sleep better.:D

So....they don't have to have ANY information to get you!

I got zapped a few years back, did not get much then, but my wife has since fixed my stupidity, my buddy told me that if I buy online to get a pay as you play credit card and use that for online purch.

I use PayPal for most of my online purchases.
As I live out in the sticks I do buy a fair bit online
My PayPal account is tied to a Debit Visa card with very little cash in it.
If I buy something substantial using PayPal I just stick enough money in the bank to cover the purchase.

I only use my debit card to withdraw money. I never ever use it to make purchases. A while ago, mail was being stolen and the credit cards were showing up in Manila. The Postal Inspector figured it was a Filipino guy working in the main office but they could never catch him stealing the mail.
