My '39 Chevy Pickup Project

Here is the frame all welded up. We just have to plate it on several of the joints and start assembling everything.

The weather got in our way the last couple of weeks. Our Costco car tents had seen better days. We ended up rebuilding our car tents last week. We got done just in time for our first big rain. We did finish up welding and plating my frame and moving it off the welding table. That's about all that we could get done.

Today we worked on the rear suspension. We installed the four bars on the rear end and attached them to the frame. We used 1 1/4" bar stock that we drilled and tapped for the 5/8" bolts. We got everything centered up and welded into place.

I cut the floor out and channeled it over the frame. I dropped it down 2 3/4 inches. I bent up some steel and added body mounts under the floor before I welded it up.

Today Norman and I built the engine mounts and transmission mount and got the engine and transmission installed.

This is going to be a sweet ride when it's finished. I have a couple of thoughts for you on your 4 bar mounts I feel I should bring to your attention though. I'm thinking you may find your going to run into a problem with your mounts standing so far off the frame like that. I would suggest that you brace them longitudinally to keep them from bending under hard launching or breaking. Personally I would just shorten them and keep them right up against the frame where they will have the most support. Just my 2 cents. Looking forward to seeing more progress. [cl

Looking at the rear bars it looks as if they are going to be mounted through sleeves going through the frame by the looks of the holes in the frame.???[cl

Thanks guys for the input. The four bars are mounted where you see them. We were going to mount them through the frame but decided to weld them in place after we started checking all the angles. The mounts are 1 1/4" solid stock that we drilled and tapped. When we have mounted everything up we will be taking the frame out and welding all the bracing in place. We will flip it over so we don't have to do any over head welding which is a pain. We will be adding gussets out to the mounts so there shouldn't be any problems.

P.S. I appreciate the input now. It's much easier to change something at this point rather than after everything is all together.

I made some progress today. I built my exhaust and we fired up the engine. I worked on baffles for the exhaust but didn't get them all finished. Hopefully in the next few days I can finish them up and start the engine with them in to see how they work out.

Here are some pictures on how I'm building my baffles. I'm not sure how well they are going to work yet maybe I'll find out later today.

If you're baffles don't work you can try motorcycle baffles. I get mine from USA twins catalog there very cheap.

The baffles worked out really well. The exhaust is quite enough that I should stay out of trouble with it.

We got a good portion of my front suspension done over the weekend. We got it all tacked up and the weight sitting on the tires. I think everything should work out well.

Here are the coil over springs that I found. They are off the rear of a mid-80's Jaguar.

I got my brake pedal installed and the floor in on the driver side and the passenger side.

I got a good day of work in today on my floor. A lot of cutting and welding. I think it turn out pretty good.

I got my steering box mounted up. I had to build bracing for it to bolt to so I ended up welding in a bunch of metal. My steering arm is going to come out from the firewall directly below the exhaust. It looks like it's going to work out really well.
