My One Week 29 Tudor build

I took a week off work to get as much done as possible. There is a local show on saturday so I have more incentive! I may not update daily but I'll try. Started yesterday by knockin apart the donor. B4 I get too much grief - there was acid stored in it and the whole cab is thin and coroded. The air lever broke as soon as I touched it!

Here is the body I plan to use. some front wheels I would like to use. And the frame I intend to use.

Of course it rained all day today so I am now down one day in the build!

@38fordtruck - yep true GT, Whole unibody is rusted away, so im puttin that Turbo engine in my Kellison GT40 kit car. 1600 pounds with around 190HP ought to be fun!!

More pics from the build. Im not as far along as I had hoped I'd be. There's a mock up pic included just see it with about an 8" chop. Had to modify the body subframe I made earlier (was gonna sit atop the frame with fenders b4 I changed my mind). Started on the frame. DADGUM those factory rivets are a pain!!! Took 5 hours just to knock it apart. Frustrating!! So I quit for the day and took the gf on the Kawi up through the mountains for about 170 miles! Made the day better!

frame rails

Got the frame rails shaped a little. Im making this one a perimeter frame so i bent it to follow the body. One nice thing about all those rivets is it gives u plenty of duplicate holes to measure from. I bolted the two rails together (top to top) using some factory holes to check that they were identicle. The two half holes were the same hole b4 I split the rails. All welds are beveled and welded from both sides and only ground on top side.

Rear lower control arms

Got some done on lower control arms and mounts. I forgot to take pics of making mounts for the axle side but got plenty of the frame side, pretty much the same process. Make a cardboard pattern, then cut it out of steel. Because the arms are triangulated (pointing in) the left and right plates were not the same. Arms are from 82 mustang btw. Plates were welded inside and out then boxed. Thats it for tuesdays work - going kinda slow but gettin there.

Well except for shocks. This is wednesdays work. No work on thursday and looking like no work today either.

Front suspension

Got a little more done in week 2
first pic is of the frame b4 the step. next is a pic of the stepped frame and the f100 twin Ibeam with radius arm and mount.

The next pic is of the twin Ibeams cut and joined then cooling under cat liter. I didn't take pics of the beam cutting and joining because of the need to keep the temp constant during the process. Beams were cut then heated, welded together then a doubling plate welded on the back of the beam.

next are pictures of the motor mounts and the doubler plates that also reinforce the motor mounts.

Well I got a chance to do a little more work on the 29.

first 5 pics are of the front suspension hat in progress. Needs some finish welding and grinding but this shows the idea.

next is an overall pic of the front suspension.

the last pic is of the shock mount.

I'm no blacksmith, so I'm just guessing that the reason for cooling the I beams under cat litter is to allow them to cool at a slower rate?
How did you weld such thick material together? Multiple passes to create a large fillet?
Cool build, and even cooler that it's under anime constraint

@rex: Thanks! Im hoping it will ride and handle ok, and with the coils all around it can easily be bagged if wanted.

@jml: Im no blacksmith either (I do like beatin metal though). Correct on both counts. Multiple pass, high current welds, cleaned after each pass. Beams were beveled at the cut giving a deep groove when put together. The beams are forged steel (as opposed to cast iron) and welding forged steel is the same as most other steel. The reason I preheated and slow cooled is because I thought it could be high carbon steel and I wanted to avoid cracking and stress points at the weld.

As a point of interest, the beam was still warm to the touch after 5 hours under the cat litter.

@ maple guy - Yeah goin into week 3 of the one week build!! Only got to work on it 2 days during the 1st week. LOL between kids cars breaking down and getting their braces off, well...like you said "best laid plans"
