opinions needed asap

Hey guys,

I found a 76 3/4 ton chevy pickup for $200 with no motor, otherwise it is complete. He says it is 8-lug, i am interested for the disk brakes for my 63 as all these years are supposed to swap out. i just don't know if the 3/4 ton will swap with the 1/2 ton. does anyone know? also, opinions on 3/4 ton 8 lug set-ups in general. are they better or worse then 1/2 ton. i want my truck to be dual purpose street beast and parts haulin truck. thanks guys!

I looked into going the other way for my 64 jimmy, and it did not look to be feasable, at least easily. Do both trucks have coil spring rear? Also the A arms are probably way differnt.

yikes, $130 to tow it home (it's in another town), i could still make my money back on it by parting it out and using the stuff i want but i think i need to pass on it now. too much money and work to get it here and i know i wont touch it for months. i still want to hear on the 3/4 versus 1/2 if anyone has any good info though. I never thought about it before. thanks

i'm pretty sure it's leaf spring rear but i don't know for sure, i had a feeling it might be diffrent but i don't know, i'll have to find one the next time i'm at the junkyard

My 64 GMC is a 3/4 ton and has mondo leaf springs and 8 lugs. In 64 GMC's were built by GMC and they are differnt than Chevy. Much more truck like. I think 66 was the last year for a true GMC. The 3/4 tons ride much differnt than the halfs. If you want a good ride and more street beast like I think the halfs are a better choice, more options for suspension parts like dropped spindles and disc kits etc.

the 76 is a leaf spring setup. I thought yours was a coil? As for the eight lug rear, I use them in my 4x4's because of the strenghth. It should be a 14 bolt full floater and the most common gears were 4:10. Most were posi, but I have found some that were not.

Wait rereading your post are you trying to swap the rears or all?

If the 3/4 ton is 2wd the front will be coils.

ok ive been building these trucks for a long time and this is a subject I know a little about, the 76 3/4 front will bolt in but you have to use the whole front cross member/ steering box, idler arm etc, as for the rear GMCs came with Leaf but from 60-72 you could order a GMC with the Coil sprung rears thats the ONLY difference in the suspension between GMC and Chevy because you could order a chevy with leaf springs also. I cant remember but I think the springs on the 60-72 GMC are narrower than the 73-87 rear leafs. I think the rear will actually bolt under the 60-72 but ya have to use the Ubolts and Plates from the 73-87s on them. hope that helps ya any, also gotta watch some of the 63s because I have ran into a few 63s that have the torsion front susp like the 60-2s had so 63 musta been the changeover year and a few got out there if its the 63 w/ coil front then the 76 stuff will bolt under the front.
