9 years ago i was an unemployable gutter drunk.
i turned into a married ,teetotalin, hotrodder, punk rock lovin, gun nut.
WHOA i didnt see that a comin.
and soon my bride and i will be much closer to my lifelong dream of an isolated home on our own property that we own free and clear.

congrats billy on all the above. just remember one day at a time, and it will all work out.

Hey Billy

I spent 28 years as a functioning drunk....I still miss it almost everyday..

We are about 4 years away from our homestead dream too...our little place will be in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, about 20 acres...some chickens, maybe a couple of goats...huge gardens medium sized barns and a 30x30 garage for all the toys...we are debt free now so this one will be built with the cash and carry method...

Are you guys going to be growing your own food too???

Congrats on your journey....God is good God thats for sure...

Looks like you going down the right road now..

Wow great job man . It's a beautiful thing when a dream starts to fall into place .

The growing season is short there so I don't know about a garden
But I like tinkering and with the legendary winds I right away thought of ways to take advantage of them.
I really like the idea of having free supplemental heat 24-7
And if it gets hot?
Use the electricity to run a swamp cooler.

If you are going to generate your own power, wind or solar, you have to have a way to store it for when the wind aint blowin' or the sun aint shinin'....thus the batteries

it never stops in wyoming. not on the plains.

Billy... same here in central Tejas! It blows nearly all the time where we are & I'm fixing to order this 800 watt kit from Missouri Wind & Solar. I wanna put elec in one of my outbuildings & I don't wanna pay to run elec out there & will prob add a solar panel as well. I'll be runnin' a battery! Nothin' like ownin' u're own place & feedin' yourself!

If I was younger and starting over, I would go off grid. You might design a system with no batterys but what will level out the currant? It seems you need the batterys for a buffer. Most good off grid homes have wind, solar with batterys and a backup generator. Get a diesel like a Listor and run it on veggie oil. I've lived in some pretty windy places but most of them the wind doesn't dependably blow at night.

Hey Billy, it's amazing the things that happen when you put the bottle down and get serious.(well, a little serious, anyway) I put it down a little over eighteen years ago and I don't miss it at all. My home and cars are paid for, I've acquired just about all the material goods I've a use for, and the real strange thing is, I haven't gone to jail in over eighteen years. I've still got the feeling for loud and fast cars but, I've also been sane enough to know when and where to run such loud and fast things. Good luck with your life in the wilderness. I envy you and yours.

Looked at the same concept for my place up north. Instead of putting a generator on top with the fan/gearbox, I'd run a driveshaft down to the ground and have everything at ground level where you can work on it. A large truck alternator will put out more current at 12 volt than a homemade version as a rule. Easier to get parts for as well, belt drive it off the driveshaft. 110 volt ac 3 phase is available from any alternator with just a bit of modification. Lindsey Books used to carry a lot of info on the subject, I have a few books from them on it. Lots of ways to go about it, just have to find the one that suits you the best.
