Rear end help

Hey guys, haven't posted anything for a long time, looking for a project, and found one. 1950 f1. I'm building a 2x4 frame with a 4 link. I have a 7.5 Ford ranger rear with 3.73 but I'd like to use the rearend that's in the 50. Does anything one know what this one is? I don't like the 7.5 offset pinion

Looks like you found a very good foundation for your project. I don't have specific knowledge about you rear axle. Someone else will no doubt have the information you need.

I think it's a Dana 41. The tag is missing. Wondering if it can handle a fairly stock 390, and if it's stronger than the ranger 7.5 I have.

It's a Dana 41. Ring gear approx. 7.5" - 19 spline axles. Should be 3.73 ratio, but 4.27 was an option. I doubt it'll survive 390 torque, but should be OK if you don't put fat tires on it and ask it to burn rubber.

Same applies to the Ranger 7.5. Abuse it and you'll lose it. An 8.8 would be a better choice than both, all day, every day.

Don't sweat an offset pinion, no matter what axle you use.


A good friend has a '52 Ford F1 with the next gen Dana 44. It has the 4.27 ratio and original flathead engine. At 70 MPH the flathead screams for mercy!

Money is tight so I'm using what I have. I've got a Dana 60 with 4.11 gears but really don't want to go 8 lug. It's just gonna be a cruiser with street tires. I might just use the 7.5, it's already cleaned off and centered up on the frame I'm building

Better than the antique if you need brakes or seals or anything else for that matter.

Lots of people have run the Ford 7.5 and the GM 7.5. I'd use it if I were you.
