since june of 1973 its something ive done almost every summer sunday. NHRA drag racing. ive been bracket racing pretty much since it was invented. my present bracket bomber is a 78 maliboo wagoon made into a 2 door sedan delivery. its powered by a 464ci olds motor. t400 trans and 9 inch fud rear. its run a best of 11.31 @ 121 mph on the motor, and 10.52 131 on the joooooce. ive qualified for the division 1 bracket finals the last 6 years straight. 5 with this car and this combination. next season i'm going to be racing a nostalgia tour. no more NHRA for me. i'll either be running the 37 packard i'm building, or a 69 pontiac i have. any other regular drag racers here?

I use to street race in the 70's. Nothing like going up against the unknown. I had a 55' Chevy 210, sbc with a 4 speed. Then a 65' Malibu with a 396 and 4 speed. Last one was a 68' Vette, 468", Airflow Reseach heads, roller cam, Dominator w/nitrous, 4 speed and 4:88's.

Tried bracket racing with a 62' Nova, sbc and auto. Ran 11:70's but didn't care for it. Guess I was a street kinda guy. Gaveit up because the penalties are too steep now. Can is confiscated and crushed now. That's what got me into rods.

Gotta love those big Olds engines. Real performance there with some minor work. Your wagon looks cool, and runs like stink. :D Very good times.

I keep saying I will build a little bracket altered again some day. I have a built 460 Ford and C6 waiting for something to put them in, and I think it will be another Austin Bantam bodied car like I ran in the '70's. But at 62 I better do it pretty quick while I can still see the other end of the strip.

When I was in high school we used to go out to the cemetery to drag race. Quiet blacktop road out in the country. Years of good racing until one night when a guy got runover and killed at the big end. Bad deal for a lot of people and families. Locally now, there is a 1/4 marked off in an industrial area. Same thing happened there a few years back with rice rockets. You can see where this is going. Luckily we have a local strip and they do Friday night "street machine" drags.

Confiscated?
Yep! If you get caught street racing in California, the car is impounded until your trial. If found guilty, the car is ordered crushed by the Judge. It happened to a friend of mine. 69' Chevelle with a bbc was crushed. Soon after, he built a prostreet camaro and was filming for a movie. During a break, he did a static burnout but the throttle stuck. He hit a concrete light standard and was killed.

Another interesting law. If you get caught driving on an expired license or suspended license, your car is impounded for 30 days. If you loan your car and the driver has no license or it's suspended, you lose it for 30 days.

Cool wagon. I have been racing for about 12 years, brack and index. I run my 60 (cough cough) bug in the SEVWA series on the east coast and local tracks also run it in the index class too. It has run a 6.84(1/8) and I have drive it to work sometimes:D. I have been thinking about building a turbo engine or add nitrous to it.

Yep, I take it out when I can, and it is a lot of fun. Alot of the guys have a lot more motor than I do, But I have more fun then they do.

Love those drag bugs. I learned, in my street racing days, not to pick on bugs. I couldn't tell how fast they were by looking at them. One night, while riding home in my friends 62' 406" Galaxie (4speed, 4:57 gears), we were at a light when a bug pulled up next to us. The bug started reving his engine so I told my friend to "spank" him. The light turned green and the bug wheelied across the intersection. We couldn't catch him!!!!
