How about this generalization...
Real rat rods look like they are on their way to becoming a nice ride or at least trying to get there but ran into arrested development in excess of freeway speeds....
fake and bake rat rods look like they are on their way to a Halloween party at Martha Stewart's or like they got lost on the way to the cattle drive or the farm auction

Don't worry a similar thing happened back in the day.
We ended up with hot rods and streetrods and they're still with us
so maybe we will end up with ratrods and street rats this time round

There is an entire club in my area where all the cars had loads of patina. It started 2 years ago, they started painting their cars. One car was a radically chopped sedan, like the old "Day Tripper". I believe it's called the "Flying Coffin".
