Had a puff ball just last night. Washed it off, skinned off the outer layer and sliced it up in 1/2 inch slabs. Just like having 'mushroom steaks'. Put one of the smaller slabs on a hamburger and it was hanging outside bun, bigger than the patty. 'La-lishous, to the max. Fried in butter on a cookie sheet on the BarB-Q, wouldn't mind another one if I could find one.[cl

Man I would love to try a Puff Ball but I rarely find them here and I never find them in time. :( From what I understand you have a pretty narrow window in which to harvest them.

I am still finding plenty of Bradleys though and if anyone was playing find the Bradley earlier...........

Here it is :D

I went out for a little hunting this evening but it got dark on me and I ended up hurrying along scanning for big ones rather than searching thoroughly. Not that there's anything wrong with that.......

.......easily got enough for a mess. :D

One of my best finds though came over the weekend........

This is a "Hen of The Woods", some say it got it's name because it looks like a hen with ruffled feathers, others say it's because the meat has the look, texture and taste of chicken. I had never found one in my woods before but this weekend I found two!

This one weighed 2 lbs. 11 oz.

and the other 2 lbs. 6 oz. Quite a pile of mushroom. They grow from one stalk and branch out like Culiflower or Corral..........

HOW3.jpg

Cleaned them up this evening and tore them into chunks, bagged about three pounds and put them in the freezer and saved about a pound out to fix for supper tomorrow evening..........

HOW4.jpg

......that is if I'm still here after this evening's test run. :p

As per the "Ten Commandments of Mushrooming" I shredded up a pan full.....

HOW6.jpg

........fried them up in butter and garlic with a little pepper and ate a small portion of them. Any time you try a new one you should double check their identity, save some for evidence (so someone can say "yeah, he ate these things right here") and eat a small portion to see if they have an adverse effect. Luckily this particular mushroom has no poisonous look-a-like, only a couple imposters that are bland.........and tonight's sampling was anything but bland! Ummmm ummmm good! [dr

It's been about five or six hours and so far, so good. LOL

'Been nice knowing you, Snake...

Ta-da! I'm back......just a close call, I don't think they even considered it a "Coma" since it only lasted a couple days and I could still hear what everyone was saying. :p

Just kidding, no problems with the "Hen of The Woods". Man I hope this mushroom continues to come up in the same spot each year like they say it does cause it is absolutely delicious! [dr Next one I find is going on the grill in large chunks.

Ray, your killing me. The only thing that grows around here will kill you or make you see things. And the local market only carries 3 types. None of the good stuff.
