I went out for a little hunting this evening but it got dark on me and I ended up hurrying along scanning for big ones rather than searching thoroughly. Not that there's anything wrong with that.......
.......easily got enough for a mess.
One of my best finds though came over the weekend........
This is a "Hen of The Woods", some say it got it's name because it looks like a hen with ruffled feathers, others say it's because the meat has the look, texture and taste of chicken. I had never found one in my woods before but this weekend I found two!
This one weighed 2 lbs. 11 oz.
and the other 2 lbs. 6 oz. Quite a pile of mushroom. They grow from one stalk and branch out like Culiflower or Corral..........
Cleaned them up this evening and tore them into chunks, bagged about three pounds and put them in the freezer and saved about a pound out to fix for supper tomorrow evening..........
......that is if I'm still here after this evening's test run.
As per the "Ten Commandments of Mushrooming" I shredded up a pan full.....
........fried them up in butter and garlic with a little pepper and ate a small portion of them. Any time you try a new one you should double check their identity, save some for evidence (so someone can say "yeah, he ate these things right here") and eat a small portion to see if they have an adverse effect. Luckily this particular mushroom has no poisonous look-a-like, only a couple imposters that are bland.........and tonight's sampling was anything but bland! Ummmm ummmm good! [dr
It's been about five or six hours and so far, so good. LOL
