I grew up jumping my bicycle over all kinds of stuff. I got to sit and talk with him one day, when he was much older. He struck me as bitter, and mean. But still a legend.

I met him at Bike Week several years ago in Daytona and I agree with you Bonehead, he was not a lot of fun to hang out with. Somewhat of a crank-a-potimus.
I can imagine why he was a crank. That many broken bones probably has gotta cause ya some pain in old age. He probably never figured he'd live half that long.
I watched a show about him a little while ago. Pretty much everyone who knew him said he was a jerk.
I watched his son jump a bunch of antique tractors at the Indiana state fair when I was a kid. The little bit that I was around him he seamed to be a cool guy.
