have a 1953 ford f100 the guy i got it from said he had the title. but not sure if he put it in his name. now he said he cant find it. did give me a bill of sale .truck still has vin tag how to i get a tiltle i live in wisconsin any info thanks

not sure how it works there, but here in Florida you can "sell" it to a wrecker (towing) company and then "buy" it back from them and you will get a title from them that way. i had to do that with one of my cars and my friend that works for a wrecker just told me today about a boat he just did it with. Most of the time they are going to charge you about $250 but you might be able to find a place to do it for cheaper or maybe free if they like you.

i drive dump truck but my boss also has a semi repair shop. plus a towing company. i got a ford escort that they took off the interstate . they had to mail letters to the owner so they had a chance to pay bill and get it back.but it was too much. and they never responded back . so i sent all the paper work into dmv and got a title. so maybe have to have vin number ran to find last owner. thanks i will talk to him about it

This same question pops up very often. The best thing is go to your own local DMV and find you own states laws.
This donesn't help you much but you should have insisted on a clean title, in the sellers name, before you handed him the money. I learned a long time ago that you have got everything you are going to get at the point of sale. Promises that they have some missing parts, title ect. that they will get to you later almost always end up not being fulfilled.
In most states and old title with a previous owners name will need accompanied by a bill of sale from the owner whose name is on the title. If the back has been filled out with a buyer who isn't you, the title is pretty much worthless anyway.

What he said. That is the way it is in most states.

As for promises. That all they are. I had a guy come to my shop with a harley saying he needed money and that he would have to go for a lost title for the bike. I gave him half and said I would give him the rest when he gets the title. That been three years ago and the bikes been setting in the corner and no title. I did have the vin checked and it was in his name.

to trusting i guess he only lives a mile from me . this guy is a hoarder said he was still looking for it . never throws any thing away . he has three more fords there there one tons said the title is with them some place. just have to keep on him. take the vin number in and have it run see who it comes back in . thanks for the replies

I have a similar question I bought what I thought was a 34 chevy with only a bill of sale which did me no good. I found a guy with a 36 and talked him into selling just the vin plate for a $100 bucks. I had it ran and it was correct and out of the system, It turns out my truck is a 36 but not the same as the vin. I know a person from DMV that can come to my house do some paperwork and get a title and the truck on a non-op till I get it together, then all I need to do is take it and get a weight cert. and pay for my plates then they will be on the way It would cost me $ 250. or can I just trailer it in to DMV with a bill of sale from the guy I got it from and file for a lost title, I think they can check the vin there or will they send me to the CHP because that will really mess me up because they will probably make me have fenders and stuff like that. I dont want to get it in the system and find out I should have paid the $250. Any ideas

here in washington state you can get a temp for three years than its yours but in those years any the old owner can show up to claim it . good luck

Florida is really good for the new owner of the vehicle i guess. This state is a possesion state (in theory and practice) where when you have the vehicle and can show proof of purchase (as long as it is proven to not be stolen or reported missing) you can do like i said earlier and sell it to a wrecking comany and buy it back from them with a title.

here in alabama, anything older than 1974, all you need is a bill of sale. but anything after that, forget it. Once the vehicle hit the junkyard, it can never be retitled, only parts. no title, no tag
