Since the Dodge seems to be near completion (yeah right) I was looking at next projects.

Since I have a full doner rig sitting behind the barn (poor old Frank) my running sort of driving 1.9l TDI Jetta, I want to use that in to some sort of other VW project. I been combing the list for Karmann Ghias for a while now, and am talking to a guy in Ann Arbor about a 1969. He wants more than I want to pay for it, but I suppose anything more than free is more than I want to pay.... I thought a mid engine TDI Ghia would be pretty sweet! I plan on measuring overall dimensions of the motor cavity on the Jetta tonight, but other than if it fits or not, what are everyone else opinions?

Good idea? Better in something else?

Ready.......... and.............. go!!!!!!

No, No, dont do any of that ,,, just bring it to my house and I'll get rid of it for ya,, you just go ahead and get another project going .. :D Oh yea, I like out of the ordinary VW projects.

look for a square back VW (or series 3 I think?) I think you are on the right track. Maybe convert it to run on vegtible oil too! [;)

I like the idea. If I was you I'd look into the square backs as well, they're usually cheaper. I think any VW would work and make a cool project though.

Hey Neverdone

There is a rat rod shop called Village Customs out of Virginia Beach VA and they build a super cool rat rod Willys truck and it is powerd by a VW diesel motor hooked to tha 5 speed. The fellow that heads it up has build several of those VW powered vehicles.

Above is a link to an article about some of there stuff. Crazy good MPG's with those motors too....especially when the vehicles are all stripped down like most rat rods are...

I say a type 3 fast back or maybe a type 2 bus or truck would be cool, the truck would allow you more room.... Type 2 stuff is not so cheap however... Type 3 not so cheap either...

I'd say a type 4 2 door wagon would be a nice cheap route, I had one, awesome parts runners for sure!

The fastback wouldn't be so bad. I have seriously thought about chopping it in to a truck. Been following the Smith Performance truck build out of one on facebook. It would be pretty useful to me as a truck. One of my friends has a couple old mazda trucks that he is looking to get rid of. Thought about getting one and taking stuff to put a bed on it.

Really want to put it on something old though..... Breathe new life in to an old beast so to speak....

I think it's a great idea! I have been bouncing between engine choices for my mid-engine bug and I keep coming back to the TDI as a real cool and practical choice.

This was with the 1.8l 16v

I want to see a v-6 front wheel drive married into a VW bug.. some how fix the wheels so the are strait.. mount in the rear .. I bet it would do a wheel stand quit nicely :D If I had the two Id do it in a heart beat ..

That looks pretty sweet, but I still want to try and mount everything sideways.... Kind of a hidden treasure sort of appeal.

I have thought about putting it in a bug. Can find them a dime a dozen anywhere and you can do some neat stuff with them!

There are people doing that a lot where there are dune buggy shops. I've seen the V6 from an older GM fwd compact along with the trans and all put in the back og bugs. It fits really well. :)

I would think you could mount the entire motor/transaxle assembly in the rear, locking the steering with some kind of strut bars to the frame.

I like the t-3 idea and also the t-4 idea. Only issues are, t-3 stuff is mildly expensive, and t-4 stuff is really expensive. They only had the 4 for a few years and not many were sold in the states. Along with the fact that those that were sold here couldn't meet emissions so they ended up crushed or in a junk yard somewhere. If you want to do mid engined, I think a 914 would be reasonable. Of course a t-3 would be killer with a front mounted diesel.

talked to a local rodder in Toledo the other day. He has a line on a guy that he claims has about 2-300 VWs. Claims he may be able to get me a ghia shell FREE!!! Waiting to see how this pans out.....
