My wife's bonehead brother had his car towed to my house yesterday. He said he was just driving along and all of the sudden he heard a loud bang and the car overheated. After I did some looking around I found that the water pump locked up causing the serpentine belt to come apart. I've never seen this before. Here is a pick of the old one & a new one.

Oh yeah, when they go like that you swear your engine blew. I went through 3 Ford Racing pumps on my 27 before I discovered I had the wrong pulleys and was overdriving it by about 50%..........I bet that sucker was spinning a million miles an hour before it grenaded itself. The difuser ring in the picture is supposed to be welded to the vanes, but it tore itself loose.

Did you get every little piece of shrapnel out of the cooling system? If not guess where it will end up?

Wow! I didn't even notice that. It's running like a champ, but I better take a closer look to make sure it doesn't overheat. My brother-in-law is not the best at keeping tabs on his car - obviously.
Thanks for the heads up guys.
