What Did Ya Get Done This Weekend?

I got nothing done here to cold today at noon -11below cold here all week (South Dakota)

Got the '58 moved over to the new house on Monday. Gene hit the nail on the head when he said moving sucks- especially when you're one of "those people" who would rather get a root canal than throw any steel pieces away...

Moving.... We had a house out in the country, it had a 24 x 36 garage that was so packed with parts, I only had a single work stall. We lived there 16 years, put it on the market and it sold in 7 days. The guy wanted it in 30 days! Fortunately, I was renting a 40 x 60 building in town. With recruited help, I hauled 10 pickup and car trailer loads of good parts out of the garage in the country, but I ended up scrapping stuff I didn't have time to move. 6,600 lbs of mostly big block Mopar drive train parts!

Then 3 years later, I moved from the 40 x 60 building into a 24 x 30 garage and a 24 x 24 garage with a 6.5' ceiling. I had to be able to work in the 24 x 30 garage. I hauled off another 3 truck and trailer loads of stuff to scrap.

Yea, moving sucks.
We have been here for 22 years. Someone else is going to move us from here.

We don't have a ton of parts to scrap but have amassed a lot of "stuff" in 40 years. Kids are going to need to get rid of it all. From what I am hearing kids now just throw everything out. Jim

If our trash barrel isn't full with normal household stuff each week, I find other stuff laying around to fill it up with. Recently cut up a Lawn Boy mower and fit it in the trash.

Here's one for ya. The difference between "junk" and "stuff"-

Junk is the stuff you throw away. Stuff is the junk you keep.

I suspect that more stuff becomes junk as moving day gets closer.

Ain't truth piled on top! Had some hardware for over 15 years sittin' there minding it's own business. Decided to have a clean up day and tossed it. In less than 1 week I needed it.

Based on my recant experiences, if i had kept the part, I probably wouldn't be able to find it when I needed it.

That's where I've been for the last week. Looking for things I know I have..... somewhere around here.

The closest I get to throwing anything out around here is when an old part leaves on something else ,maybe even as a different part!

Interesting topic. I am probably the king of stuff, or the sultan of junk.. When I was younger, I knew where everything was, but things are getting harder to find, although I do have more stuff. I see now, there is no way I can use all I have before I die. But I am always looking for that cool part or piece. I have saved up millions of parts, and pieces in anticipation of retiring into my art career. And I have sold 20 or 30 tons of my scrap pile turned into art pieces. So scrap prices may be on the rise, and I will scrap out another 20 or 30 tons that is truly scrap. But it is hard to get rid of too much in fear that I may need it. My kid has been warned that he may have to clean out my yard some day, and he is up for it, but I don't want to make that too hard of a job.

Maybe I have come full circle? I know I have saved things for a specific reason I knew was coming in the near future. I used to know where I put those things for safe keeping. Then, as the "collection" grew and more things were added to the collection, finding the things when I needed them became increasing harder to do. I often only found the saved things I had been looking for after I had to buy replacement things.

As time has moved on, I find that those things I have saved for a specific reason, have not even been showing up after I had purchased the replacement parts! I came to the conclusion that if I can't find it, even after I have purchased a new replacement thing, maybe it was time to quit saving things.

Honestly, as I am preparing for more things to leave, I have found myself asking "why in the world was I saving this?" more and more often.

The shop seems larger now that there isn't as many saved things laying around waiting to be found. Getting rid of stuff isn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. It must be time to clean the shop some more!

I don't build killer art work though... That elk is cool, Bonehead.

Tools are like that too especially ones you don't use often. I have 4 basin wrenches. Jim

That is awesome! I too have been thinking alot about leaving so much stiff behind when I'm gone. My Wife's mother was a bit of a hoarder and it was extremely difficult cleaning when she past. We are tag sales and had a 20yd dumpster that we continually filled. Luckily every night dumpster divers came a took alot of stuff. If they hadn't we would probably would have had 3 or 4 of these to clean the house. I don't want my kids to be left with a problem like that. We had a storage unit that I haven't even been to in probably a year. Why am I spending $200 month? Jim
