What does a hood blanket do ?

Im working on a couple of wrecked cars,got to replace the hoods,and the old blankets are falling apart,and Im not going to replace them. I was just wondering , what are they for anyway? Cut down on noise?

Yeah, just for noise reduction

Noise reduction and to keep heat away from the paint on the hood, especially on cars where there isn't much space between the hood and engine.
