we installed this ford car 9" rear when we built my 27 rod.
the fill plug was added by someone in this rears past.
what is this rear end called?

There are a bunch of ford 9 inch rear axles, Some had fillers in the front, some in the back, more important is the flange on the end of the axle.
 
As far as year goes, it's one of the early ones, 57 - early 60's, judging by the small center section of the housing and the smooth backside without the 2 dimples. Lots of guys used to seek these ones out because of their clean look and more clearance for exhaust etc., in tight swap situations. Turns out that in drag racing with low gears, sticky tires and big power these housings can be bent so the later ones are favored for that use - also why the weld-on back brace was developed.
 
Old friend of mine calls those the "Edsel housings"..right era I suppose, as it is an older variety of 9"..I have one in my 82 chevy truck project..

I built a back brace for it before I installed it..only pic I have here of it..
