Check post #18 for some explaination! Also, some of the baddest fires occur in swamps. If you've never heard of a muck fire, you are in for some surprises. The layer under most swamps down here is muck. Because swamps are not always wet, you sometimes get fires that travel to the edge of the wet areas then start burning the muck. The fire can go underground and burn for extended periods of time and come up somewhere else. We had one within 2 miles of here in an area called "cabbage island" years ago where a friend of mine got burned real bad in a flash over. The Forestry Service has several pieces of machinery still out there sunk out of sight that were lost during that one...tractors, trucks, dozers with plows...gone, gone, gone!
