Making a bench seat for my speedster. The main question is where do you get foam padding for the cushion? Do I have to go to an uphoulstery shop and beg them for some or can you get foam elsewhere like a craft store?

There are places online.
I would go with at least 2 layers, one firm, one not as firm on top.
Some of the bike guys have used the 1/2" Blue foam sold for camping, comes in a roll around 30" wide.

I've used the foam from the back seat of cars. The backseat usually isn't used very much (insert your own joke here) so the foam isn't worn out or broken down. You can usually get it for nothing, or next thing to it. It has the right density, and quite often is molded to a seat shape. If your seat cushion can't be very thick because of restricted headroom, (as in a chopped top) layers of foam carpet underlay works real well. Regular yellow contact cement works well for gluing pieces together if needed.

Really? Awesome - I was looking at my wife's exercise mat with that in mind. Then I was wondering how to glue two layers together....and Sniper answered that one!

Thats my plan then. I want thin cushions for my speedster but high-density to keep my butt off the wood base. Two layers on the seat and a single layer on the backrest should be pretty good.

foam

82 - 92 camaro rear seats are real shallow but have high sides for alittle leg support. local u-pull-it $10 a pr...usually blk, grey, red, blue. These work well in a chopped truck. Kinda like buckets but w no back. Insert a 7/8 sheet of plywood to bottom and attach w staple gun, then took 3/4" stainless banding around outer material. You could build low frame or attach from under floor w short 5/16 machine screws.
They make a 5/16 well nut[has barbed flange encased nut] to embed in wood bottom...found at LOWES. Make your own back rest w carpet padding/bubble wrap or the like then cover w material.

Rat rod seats complete....

you can always find cheap/free mattresses/crib mattresses or padding on craigslist or even go by a mattress company factory -- they always have truck loads of foam.

Rubber Cement, or Contact Cement, works fine.
The spray can stuff work too. Just follow the instructions.

You can laminate layers, then carve to shape.
