Well... while doin' a lil late Spring cleanin' I ran across a trove of old Hot Rod mags & I had to laugh at this article! The more things change... the more they stay the same! [ddd[ddd[ddd
That's pretty cool. I kinda chuckle when I see some of the things that people are doing today and they think they invented them, like "body dropping" or "suicide doors". It is hard to find anything that hasn't been done a bunch of times in the past, and with crude tools to boot.
That's really cool. Like Don said, nothing new under the sun really, just better and more accessible tools. I like looking at old magazines and seeeing stuff like this.
I have some old magazines in my collection from the 50's and 60's and MAN was the workmanship not so hot back then ! The cutting torch was the most expensive tool most rodders had and they used it for EVERYTHING. I even saw an article where Herbert and Meeks (who were touted as THE guys to go to for any engine swap back then) did an engine swap and it looked like something a beginner would do today. They torched stuff out and never ground stuff smooth.
As much as the traditional guys like to think every hot rod back then was a California showcar, the truth is there were more cobbled up hot rods than well done ones. Some of the worst examples were early drag cars........those guys did not care about pretty, just about going fast.
Do, keep in mind it was an era when Mom holding a baby in her lap with no seat belt at 70mph was no big deal. Today you'd be thrown in jail for child endangerment.
Yeah, right ! Believe me, you have NOTHING to worry about.
I have a new nickname with my Sons, it is TORCH. Everytime we are buildilng something and we need to bend or cut something, I always suggest letting me get the torches out. [ I love using that thing, something so satisfying about melting something into pieces. It's like Christmas when they finally let me light that baby up. [cl
