Need help

I have a 1950 chevy styleline with 216 engine.please bare with me fore i am new to these car's. first question is, what should the volts coming out of the viltage regulator be for a 6v system and a 12v system? I checked it and it's putting out 12.3v -12.5v The car still has generator, not an alternator the headlamps were 6v.It will not start with a 6v batter but fires right up with 12v battery.While running i sounded the horn and it sounded normal.I am so confused on whether or not my system is 6v or 12v.Also the valves are ticking real loud what should the gap be on them and will sea foam quiet them down?

Sounds like it was partially converted to 12v...can you post some pictures of the voltage regulator. As for the valve lash intake: .006 hot and exhaust: .015 hot.
