    350 or 400 most bullet proof

    The 400 is hands down the winner, built right it will handle 2 to 3 times the torque the 350 can handle. I ran one in drag car for 5 years between rebuilds and it was still good to go only needed fresh ATF and replaced the rear thrust washer with a torrington roller bearing.

    GM HEI-Thoughts?

    SO, $20 for a re-curve kit and $25 for an adjustable vac chamber that allows you to dial in the best MPG's and most HP for the dollar, you consider it a waste of time and money?? In the right tuners hands, these parts are the difference between a good running engine and a GREAT running engine.

    My Sons car getting a new motor.

    yeah, .006" seems loose. I used to shoot for .004" per inch of bore. but I'm not sure the extra .008 to .010" of ring gap would cause the degree of fouling you saw. Did you stagger the gaps around the bore so that no gaps lined up with each other?

    all those things can be adjusted with the correct re-curve kits and adjustable vacuum advance canisters.

    if it's pumping oil in only some of the cylinders, it sounds like some of the top or second rings were installed upside down. this will cause oil be scraped off the walls to be pushed upwards instead of down into the crankcase.

    307 chevy camshaft selection?

    in a 283 the 204-214 cam will be on the rough idle side and rev like crazy, a very good choice. used a very similar cam in a 350 powered pickup and loved it. got 15-16 mpg towing 12,000 lbs and still had power to spare. sounds like the one for your SBC.

    used one in a drag car sbc327 and turned over 9000 rpm consistantly. ran 5 or 6 different cars on the street over a twenty year period and only had one fail on me, the the pickup wire broke at around 150K.

    307 Pistons in 250 L6

    not sure if this will help in your search, but the 307 forged piston used to be available from TRW under part number L2402F, a flat top with 4 valve reliefs. found these come with rings: http://12bolt.com/250292_products/250_pistons_57_rod_stock_length
