12 volt question

Anybody have any ideas of around what year(s) cars/trucks switched over from 6 to 12 volt systems?

Depends on the car. Some in the area of 1955 others not until 66 ( VW I think) or so.

Chevrolet switched in '55, Ford in '56. Most others right around that time frame as well with a few oddball holdouts...

Buick did it in 1953. Depending on what model you had, it was either 6-volt or 12-volt. The Specials (like mine) were 6-volt, but the fancier models like the Supers and Roadmasters (the V8 models) were 12-volt. '53 is also the year Buick came out with the Nailhead, so that might explain the switch.
