A few bumps in the road but you're moving along... think the frame issue is resolved.... now the power issue so you can welder up...
 
Progress

Ground out the factory welds at the seam. Time for careful measuring, then cut.

Got more done

Got the front joints cleaned up, and cut out 10 inches from the back. Now the fun begins. I plan to tack the chassis together with my 110 welder, then roll it up to the house, and set up some temporary 220 to run the Thunderbolt.

thats a good plan, I would guess a 110 all the way up on a slip joint would be more than enough compared to a butt joint.


in the future history of your project you will love telling people how you didnt give up and sectioned the frame. maybe its just me but I dont love how flatbeds look. [cl

Grinding out the factory weld wasn't enough to separate the chassis. The joint held firm. Weld quality was excellent. Used cutoff wheel at 45 degree angle to get it done. After 2 hours of clean up, I was happy with the result.

Pulled fuel lines and the ugly gas tank. Safety first. Did not like the tank anyway. The plan is some kind of fun hot rod tank behind the cab in the bed.

we have boat salvage yard and l got a 25 gallon to put in the bed of my pilothouse for low
dollars, easy to install, a good fit in the bed and looks great.

yeah I advocated doing it without having done it, not something I normally do. :D I knew it could be done and I could do it though! looks great!


skull I wish kansas wasnt landlocked. maybe after the yellowstone volcano we will have oceanfront property. boats here are mostly bass boats for the mud bottom lakes. :mad:
 
back in the saddle

Moved the chassis home from the farm. No trailer, no problem. Got the front half of the chassis in my GMC, and the boys loaded the back half on their work truck. Much appreciate their help.

Got power and coffee at home, can work some in the evening, plus its not 20 miles away. Will be welding the chassis together this week. Glad to be back at it.

inside

Got the chassis unloaded and set up inside with wheels back on. My son will weld it. I'm learning, best if he does it. Opened up some space at the farm, so we moved the 52 inside. Bees were not happy with me. Another winter outside and maybe the hood would match the rest of the truck :D

Had to chase these 2 black tail off two weeks ago, almost got my wifes tulips.

super great! best way to learn is to weld thick stuff, teaches you to really burn it in there and not just poop on top like a caulking gun. :)

Got the chassis welded back together. [;) Learned some things today. My attempt to do vertical welds created bird poop. My son handled these for me. I did some horizontal welds that should be fine. Found a date stamp from June 1982, it also says "Parish" on there. The chassis was made in Shreveport. Vehicle history is fun.
