i would assume that they are cast and not forged right?

i see some of the early fords were a forged design. i just didnt know if gm had to do the same because of ford.

i have a 1933 olds axle.

I don't think any company made cast iron axles. Reason being cast iron is brittle and will crack and break under highway use. Some may have been cast steel, many after market axles are cast steel. The way to test it is hit it with a grinder, if it throws tiny sparks that dissapear quickly it would be cast iron. Steel will throw lots more sparks. Do a test on something you know is cast iron like an ole cylinder head, an then a piece of steel like ole angle iron, so you'll see what the sparks look like. There may be a better way to test it but that's how I do it..good luck..:D

What are you trying to do. I have seem people make link mounts and bolt then to the axle in the 4 u-bolt holes. looks really good done that way. Plus I always like to use as many parts that came off the car instead of putting a boring ford axle in it.

i seen a post where they trimmed off the ears and used a standard trailing arm/ wishbone. i thought it looked alot cleaner than the big bracket to the stock leaf bolt holes.

I've done just that a couple times, on a 55 Chev pu axle and a 41 Chev pu axle. Your Olds axle is probably much like a Chev, tho if you're planning to do a brake uprade, not sure if Chev kits work ?? I have a 34 Chev Standard axle that I'd planned to use but found that it has smaller spindles and nobody makes a disc brake kit. Here's pix of the axles I modified, the 41 is the unpainted one, cut off the mounts and other bumps, welded up the spot where I wanted the perch bolts to go and drilled it.
The 55 axle was much heavier, I spent a lot of time with the grinder thinning it down. Either way they make a nice looking axle with 4" drop plus not yer usual Ford...
