well it looks like a Saginaw 4 speed manual transmission. easy to rebuild, the gears are getting harder to find but all the other parts are easy to find.can be used as a floor shift, aftermarket shifter assemblies are avalible at most parts stores. these things dont last long behind good horsepower.there should be 1, 2 or 3 small rings cut into the input shaft this determines the gear ratio.if u need to know gear ratio reply with number of rings on input shaft.

So is this something I should invest the time into or should I look for something that will hold up better. I kind of wanted an automatic. I usually wouldnt say that but I think I wanna be different on this one.

shifters, etc

Not to promote Speedway too much, but it is the only magazine that I have on my desk! Anyway, what your looking for can be found in the following link:

I used the $20 economy shifter for racing (910-21950). Rigged up my own mounts and linkage. What you're looking for first is this part- 91021956_L.jpg
You can make these pieces pretty easily yourself as well. I think it takes coarse thread 5/16" bolts to mount to the tranny. They sell the fancy rods with heims, or you can rig up your own...I used 3/8" rod with bolts welded on the ends to the shifter and washers welded on the other ends to the little bracket plates. The length of the rods can be a trial and error deal without the heims, but super cheap! Use nylon nuts!!!

I plan on using a Saginaw on my truck as well, they are plentiful and very strong.

i am a striaght shift man myself,,it maybe cheaper to run than a auto, but a auto maybe easie to find, i like s10 5 speeds

if it came out from behind a 4.3 no theres nothing you have to do to it, but if it came out of a 2.8 v6 or a 4cylinder there a little but not much prttey easy,, with the 2.8 and the 4 cylinder trans you wil have to find a bell housing from a starieght shift eariler model , but the 4.3 will bolt up with its bell housine, also you can have a hydraulic cltch instead of mechanical,, but you can use a mechanical of any of them,, i like the 5 speed for the over drive, the 4.3 is the best choise,, you can also use the camaro 5speed but t you have to cangnge the rear housiong cause the shifter sets at a angle, but most of this stuff is easy to find and to do,, RTD

So if I decide to go automatic is it the same on the s10?

only if its a 4.3 ,, you will need a fly wheel for the year ya motor is also a starter and then bot it in,, 4.3 is over drive 700r it will work good with anything with low gears , raging from 350 to 411, gear ratio rearends,, ytou will have to do something with the over drive engage and disengage but no problem there a kit, you can buy,, most tran shops know what to get,,1

So Im only used to Hydraulic clutch systems, how does the good old system work on the trans I have. Plus I am missing the bellhousing. Any Ideas where to get one? I am looking into all of my options.

this next page will show ya what ya need for the pedals, you can find this stuff in a junk yard cheaper
http://www.americanpowertrain.com/gm/transmissions/clutch-link-kit.html
this page list the parts seperate so you can get a good ideal what ya are looking for,, many trucks will have all this , year dont matter for mechanaical cltuch levels, because you can adapt,,, hdrys just have to match bell housing and trans, cltuch parts will have to be used to match the clutch plate to the trans mainshaft and the fly wheel to motor, pressure plate to the fly wheel,, really this stuff is simple just do some readin and dont let prices scare ya off, cause junkyard have aloy of the hard parts,, and you can also by from part stores,,

hope this helps
