I know this will sound a bit odd but....

Something that helps me is a 2' florescent drop light. I keep my shield set pretty hard as I'm had some places come up on my eyes from too much welding in the past. I've been looking for one of the old free standing surgery lamps that I maybe put rollers on.

that is genius -- probably work clipped onto the helmet just the same.

i have near perfect vision and still have trouble seeing where i want to weld in some lighting - or lack there of... like inside tanks -- have to color around the weld area with soapstone so i can get my bearings --

Today I went to the weld shop and bought the magnifyers and some new lenses to replace the clouded ones on Dan's helmet. The magnifyers clip right into a track in the inside of the helmet and come in various strengths up to 250 magnification (I guess that means 2.5 times the real size) I put all of that on the helmet and what a difference it makes. I didn't try welding yet but just looking through the lens I can see much better.

The guy told me not to wear my regular glasses with these in place as it goofs up the image. Can't wait to try some welds. :)

I will find a way to keep welding no matter how bad my vision gets.Right up to the point where the only other choice is the braille method

Mac Tools sells a "Mig Light". It's a small unit that clips on to the mig torch and shines an intense but small beam of light on to the weld area. I love it. I think it cost me something like $25 bucks a couple years ago.

That's what I am looking for. I asked the guy at the welding shop the other day about one and he said he hadn't heard of any, and wondered how they kept from getting damaged from the heat and spatter.

I'll try to find a MAC truck running around and see if they still have them. Thanks,

Don

Really nice to know that I'm not alone.....

Thanks for all the good ideas..... Love the braille thing.....lol...
Would put a whole new drift on "touchy feely"..... on another note.... I tried droppig the setting on the helmet to 12 and putting more light on the area...it was better but still had to be further back from it than I would have liked..... going to get new tank of 75/25 so will look at what they might have for the magnifiying thing..... I tried 2.75 reading glasses but didn't work well.....

I can't understand why you guys don't simply get the correct spectacles for close work. [S

If you can read a newspaper you should be able to see well enough to weld, and if you can't, go get stronger glasses.

I wear bifocals, but for gas cutting I need to put on my reading glasses, so I can see out of the cutting goggles.

For welding I simply use my bifocals and an automatic helmet. I use pretty strong glasses for close work too, as my left eye is really weak.

I guess I was being cheap for not opting to have a pair of glasses made with my bifocal script for just this type of thing.... reading glasses don't come strong enough to match mine script..... If I wear my regular glasses I have to tip my head too far to see through the welding helmet.... the spot goes out of view.... Anyway, If the magnifing thing doesn't work, I'll break down and have pair of reading glasses made up from my bifocal script.....

a word of warning on bifocals

carefull if you got new bifocals. when I first got mine I went to the washroom was taking care of buisness when I happened to glance down. [enlargement] well thinking it wasnt mine I put it back..now my pants are wet??????:mad:
