LS really is the way to go these days. We have done 2 sofar and have one maybe another build coming up soon. The orig cost is high but things are coming down. If you want power/sound/reliability/gas milage and so easy to maintain its the way to go.

We started another LS build about 2 months ago. We don't have the engine/trans yet as we are in the mock up stage after replacing all the foors from and including the firewall to the trunk. It is a 67 Nova SS that was a full on race car most of its life so it was kinda twisted up.
Anyway It will be a very hot LS1 with a carb looking throttle body with a working cowel induction so when ya open the hood at 1st it will appear to be a blinged up small block. Just a foam mock up engine/trans for now. The headers, from Detroit Speed are works of art in SS.
