Wife was at work tonight and went on a site that she regularly goes to. She tried to copy the url and send it to me so i could watch the second season of dexter. Well it gave her a virus that we cant seem to get rid of. Its called antivirus xp 2008. Looks like a virus scanner but it seems like a virus its self. We have tried to remove it and uninstall it several times and it never goes away. System restore wont go back farther than 5 minutes ago for some odd reason so we cant do an SR. She installed an Ad-Aware and it gets about half way and then shows a blue screen and saying something about stopped to protect the computer from crashing.

I need extreme help on this please. Talk to me like im dumb so ill know what to do lol. If i can go into DOS or wherever and fix this then please let me know, and let me know how.

Thanks in advance. In much needed help.

Install your Windows disk and run a restore from that. I have had to do this a few times due to kids and game sights. If run restore it will retain your current info.

I wish I could remember exactly how I did it but I can't. It has itself attached to your startup menu and you have to go in there and get rid of it, very annoying sucker. I googled for it and got a buttload of hits but everyone of them wanted money after they ran the free scan.
So anyway, if someone can help you find your startup menu, maybe you can delete it out of there.

lol the geek squad may be out of this things league.

Ive tried to run everything i can think of and everything gets shut down, or i get a screen saying that windows has shut down to save the computer from crashing. Im thinking, damn crash already. If it doesnt get fixed soon, then looks like i may have to reformat. Its a dell computer so im going to call them later on (after i wake up officially, had to take the dogs out) and see what they can do for it, or if they can send me a windows xp disk. Cant seem to find one with the laptop.

Ok i just went in and disabled everything from startup and it didnt do anything for this crap. If i had hair id pull it out right about now.

Torrey,
More bad news. Unless i am very wrong... Dell does not give startup discs with their computers & will charge you to deliver one! I personally think that is a crock because they (& Micro$oft) charged you for one. I switched to Mac's years ago & have never looked back. Good luck & don't discount the Geek Squad... only thing is... they typically take too long.

yeah i wish id never went with dell. Wife wanted a laptop and that was the quickest way to get it for her. Dumb mistake i tell ya.

If i go out and buy a winxp disk, will that get rid of this stupid virus crap. Ive ran multiple scanners and nothing is getting it. My background and screensaver settings are completely gone, dont even have that option anymore. So will formatting and reinstalling wipe this virus out?

DON'T get me started

So will formatting and reinstalling wipe this virus out?

I'm the tech guy @ our company & have wiped hard drives... installed Linux... wiped that... reinstalled XP & even that didn't get rid of the virus. DON'T get me started but I personally think they should hang Micro$oft & the morons who do this kinda stuff (we don't have to deal with this on Mac's). I have never seen the virus you got but would Google it until you find the cure. That's usually what I wind up doing but have had to ditch many a PC too (I have @ least 30 dead ones in my garage from such nonsense)... ask me it that ****es me off!?!?! Anyway... good luck & start Googling!!!

Ok, I'm certainly no computer guy, but I did get rid of a nasty virus I had plus 155 more that I picked up somehow. (darned porn ) Mine was doing what you describe, plus it would lock up on it's own at regular intervals. Here is what I did:

Turn the computer on at the harddrive and IMMEDIATELY start tapping the F10 key and keep tapping it until a new screen appears, this puts you into System Restore. You can choose to do a non-destructive reconstruction, or a destructive reconstruction. The destructive one turns your computer into exactly what it was the day you took it out of the box.........EVERYTHING IN IT DISAPPEARS, pictures, saved stuff, etc. Do the NON-Destructive one and it will leave everything else intact, but lose the viruses for you. I screwed up a while back and chose the destructive one and lost all my pictures and programs.

My Son was having problems with his computer and I told him about the non-destructive thing and he did it with good results too. Try it, you have nothing to lose and the computer will guide you through the steps.

If it works, send me a hubcap. :D:D:D:D I had so many viruses that SpyBot couldn't get rid of them, now it is virus free.

I had a little bugger similar a few years ago. Used a program called SpyBot. Cleared this sucker right up. This is a free download. Addy is www.spybot.com . Downloads are on the left side of the page. Hope this helps you out.

Yeah, Spybot normally does a very good job, but there are some viruses out there now that laugh it it when it tries to clean them out. The ones I had would literally lock up Spybot in the middle of doing it's job. No lie, the count on viruses I had was 155!! I inadvertently left my computer on one day on a Googled website when I was looking up some recipes (ok, I can hear the laughter now :eek: I like to cook) and when I came back to it a few hours later I ran Spybot and found 155 of the critters had crept in. When I tried to destroy them they kept locking up the program right in the middle.

I was going to take it to a computer shop but decided to try something that I paid Microsoft one time to do when I had a similar problem. At that time they guided me through the non destructive recovery program and it worked, so I did it this time and it also worked. Not only that, but my computer was getting very slow and now it is running much faster.

Thanks for all the replies yall. Im obviously not the only one with this crap. Over at xp-vista.com they have several posts about this and alot are having trouble getting rid of it as well. Its a anti virus conterfiet (sp?) that looks like a anti virus program but isnt. There are two kinds, the xpantivirus2008 and the vista antivirus 2008, says both are very distructive.

Don, i will try that, but i could careless if i lose all the pictures on the laptop cause we have the same ones on here as well. And it sucks cause the laptop is only 6 months old.

Well, I have a Compaq computer and Windows 98 and that is what mine has, maybe yours is different. Go into your help section and put in system recovery and see what it says there.

Don

Ever wonder where this crap comes from? Stop and think who profits from it...hmm....

No kidding... but note: there is no $BILLION cottage industry to keep Mac's clean & they're really making headway these daze for many reasons.

PC's - thousands of worms, viruses & spywares.
Mac's - I've never had 1 virus in 17 years.

Ummmmm...

People who write worms, viruses etc. should be shot!!! Think of *all* the lost time, $$$ & productivity!!!

tried spybot and it still didnt get rid of this crap. The computer is running fine and isnt slow or anything. After i ran spybot then i got my backgrounds and screen savers back. So i guess its a sit back and wait type game now. The ******* is still on there but the computer is running like normal so we shall see what happens. Hopefully nothing.

And i agree, whomever designed this crap should watch "Surviving History" on sunday nights and think about what could be done to them. I vote for the chinese water torture myself.
