I love the flathead four in the model a but....it's really a primitive piece of machinery. Was wondering what other flat fours would be a good alternative. I'm wanting all the modern improvements like pressure oiling, insert bearings and a syncronized trans would be good.Any suggestions? Thanks

You may want to check out the Continental 4 bangers that were used in Henry J's and also alot of industrial applications..............ruggs

Here is some reading about the Continental 4's and 6's.......ruggshttp://www.hemmings.com/hcc/stories/2008/12/01/hmn_feature13.html

Thanks for the link.
From what i can find Henry J had the last Continental flathead four.It would be interesting historically to use a Continental. Probably impossible to find now.

Not sure which ones would be what you want, but tractors may be an alternative!!

I wonder if the Ford flathead 4 tractor motor would fit up to a car/truck bellhousing?
I believe they were used until '53 but haven't seen any info on what upgrades were made.

The ford flathead tractor engines were only about 110 cubic inches, used the same pistons at the flathead v-8s. I think they were only about 25-30 hp, and aren't going to rev any better than a model A. They will probably be tougher with modern bearings and oiling...but a 200 cube Model A motor will be "fast" by comparison.

Maybe if you had a really lightweight speedster, it would be neat to use one.
