For the bed extending/folding plans, consider what will happen to the moving end of the bed if something gets dropped or a forklift dings the bed... since it will be a shop truck. As careful as you may be, stuff happens.

A little rust wouldn't hurt a thing on a rat rod. I am sure you will be fine with your plans.
