Removable hard top

Im am making a hard top for my roadster. I made the frame today and hope to skin it next weekend.

The leather-grain ABS plastic sheeting as used on Bronco cabin roofs would look really great.

As a matter of interest, what size tubing did you use?

The lines look great,
but if you put a soft/stretchy top on it, you might need to add horizontal bracing across the back/top corner to keep from pulling the very outside braces in.

I'm anxious to see the finished product.

I am thinking of 24 gauge for the skin, but may use 20.....heck not really sure at this point.

I used half by half..... .88 thick... Im going to stick with an all steel top at this point.

Here's some pics of 2 different removable tops I made a few years ago. I used angle iron and 1x1 tubing for framing and 18 ga. sheet for the skin. I've found 20ga. or 22ga. is kinda thin and gets too wavy when I'm welding - 24 ga. would be really touchy to weld (for me that is..). The heavier gauge stuff is a bit tougher to form but gives you a little more meat to sand down when dressing the welds.

Thats some really nice work you did on those tops! looks great.... I plan on using 20 gauge with a twist I will post what I have come up with.

Made some more progress on sheeting the top, I made three breaks to add some stiffness. Not sure if I like it yet so I stopped......

I vote yes for the ribs. I think once you have the sides rounded off, and complete it will look much better to you.

I think it looks very good as is.
