I have a hopped up 6 banger (not chevy) and have driven it for years. Here's my take
The good;
Looks cool and easy to work on

The bad;
Takes just as much money to build as a V8 and you have half as much power when your done
Crappy fuel economy
Sounds like barf with loud pipes (My opinion only, yours may differ)

So a nice stock 283 power pack will still run circles around a mildly built up six, sound cooler and get way better mileage.

The wow factor of popping the hood and seeing a 270/302 Jimmy with triple carbs, Judson magneto, headers and Offy valve cover is undeniable. Throw in a Wayne or Horning cross flow head, Weber side drafts or injection stacks, now we're talking.

To answer your question, I offer one way. I bought Carter Ball & Ball singles, their are cheep and there is a Co. in Canada who has all the parts..
I can light up my 10" rear tires all day long, with them. I built a very simple progressive linkage that works real good. running on the center carb most the time I get real good gas mileage. If you like when you get to building your carb setup PM me and Ill send a bunch of pictures....Doug n Sweetpea

old build

I built a 53 6 in 57. I made my own split exhaust manifold, ran a bigger truck single barrel. I used Gmc rockers, they were higher lift I had to modify the chevy rocker stands by grinding off material from the base so the chevy pushrods would work. I used to beat the 50 ford flatheads a couple kids had. the weak stock timing gears used to shear off teeth then you would bend the stock solid pushrods. and they had trouble getting enough oil to the rocker arms. I was thinking about buying the weld on intake carb flanges, you could cut a hole in your stock manifold and add a couple more carbs, but started building and olds Rocket powered 36 chevy coupe.
