WOW! You've been cooking this one! I love the idea. The interior is way cool. The burlap art on the seats is awesome. I'm running out of adjectives.... I really like how you used the roof for the rear. The curve should make it look way better. How about a new side shot of it?

Are you stripping your metal front and back where you need to weld? It makes a big difference when welding sheet.

sanded

sanded the painted parts on the out side then realized i would be spot welding the inner sides, had to wire brush. Next time i wll prepare both sides. Not too shabby welds for a HF 110v gasless. It seem to work fine for light duty work.

Painting progress

had to get the rattle cans out,...

105 degrees today

Was really hot today so I only got the bed mocked up, welded, welded in the (don't know what you call it { deck pan?}) panel behind seat, started making my headrest buckets [yes they do look like old motorcycle skull caps]

Next pull front axle and extend 8" to 10" ( the wife likes when I say that ) extend 8" to 10".

Anybody know of a longer speedo cable that will work on a stock vw speedo, need to find one after I extend 8" to 10"

Oh yeah, wondering if 70hp will be enough or should I drop the built 206hp, thinking the later will be a winter project,.......[ddd

oh yeah pics

here' they are

LOGO

Every shop truck needs some sort of door graphics,...so I got out the old sign paint and started tinkering. The "WH" is for my name and wife's, and on her door will be "HW" just so the logo looks symmetrical (think that is spelled right),...hmmm "wagon hacker/ hack wagon" nope looks like a Waffle House logo to me,..... once it dries I'll start aging it. Paint thinner 1000 grit and some elbow power should do the trick.

shop door logo

Didn't like the logo I did last week so designed another one. This one is in German being the car is a VolksRat.

Just taped off a section got out the soapstone and laid out some lettering. Used a pin striping brush to outline (no I aint no pinstriper) then used a parts brush to fill in, hoping that it leaves heavy brush marks so when it is sanded down it will look real old. Used some masking tape and laid out a gear design and sprayed it. Plan on out lining the letters once dry then sand to age it a little.

Did get the front end extended out, was torn between 8" to 10" so I extended it out 9".

Got to get a couple steering knuckles and replumb the front brakes lines and the frontend will be done. TEST DRIVE!!!!!!!!!

Lots of little things to finish up / headlights, tail lights, headrest, seat belts, brace the bed,.........

Sunday tinkering

Outlined the door logo and dry sanded a little for now.

Made firewall and decided to make it curved so that I could use the original bug tail lights, switched the left and right housing to get the lenses to be straight and flat. ( think they did this on the old manx dune buggy kits )

Started constructing bed cover, plans are to cover it with bamboo ( I see it in my mind, hard to explain, pictures will come once done with cover )

Those old headlights look pretty good on there man! Glad they found a good home. Your fenders haven't moved yet, but they look pretty good sitting next to my car... :p

Got to the bone yard and got me a couple steering u joints now I can fab up the steering.

Did put some burlap around some foam and finished headrest, made a bed cover from bamboo mat, used what was left of side molding on cover. Scary thing is I using alot of the part off the bug in differant locations, but I like it, I like it alot,...........

hmmmm,...

Heading out this morning to Dayton, Ohio for BUGJAM then swing by Springfield for swapmeet.
Got this idea in my head after looking at this photo of the headlight mounts I moched up. I thinking that a small set (utility trailer size) of half leaf spring would make some cool looking head light mounts. Anyone ever do this and how did they look/work? This pic is from the top but you kinda get the idea of using leaf springs.
