Nah, I just wing it.

lol same here.

i seen how tight you have the member cut for the rack. do you have enough room to get it in and out with the croos member on the rails?

could you fish the rack into the frame with threw holes?

looking good flipper.

It may not be completely hidden, but I think you have done a great job at trying to hide it. Once everyting is mounted engine and such you will berely notice it like that down there, unless i missed that it needs to come up more yet...

The height in the last pics should be as high as it needs to go.

glad to see another update....i think that it will look ok when its all assembled.....
i find many times i worry away at something that is relatively "invisible" when the project is complete....

a new motto for Flipper = "when in doubt-wing it!!!":D[cl

The "steering box" sricking up doesn't bother me. The tie rod boots are what I wish I could do something about.

Do you have the length to allow a machined arm to go in there that would use a more traditional tie rod end at the connection to the hub as well at the rack? I assume you would need almost full movement in all directions at both connection points... hopefully that makes some sort of sense.

The problem is sealing up the rack. The rack moves around 5 inches each way...from flush to the body to 5 inches out. It takes a big ole boot to work.

No more than this car will be driven. I'm thinking about not running the boots, just cleaning out most of the grease and basiclly running the rack dry.

Any idea how long it would last?

Scratch that idea.

I thought about it 15 seconds and realized that if a pebble got in between the teeth on the rack, it would lock up the steering. Stupid idea.

Flipper I wonder if you could find dust caps from motorcycle forks the right diameter to fit the rack ends? They would be less intrusive if you could. But it would have to be a small bike.

On the drivers side the teeth on the rack exit the housing when you turn left. If you are talking about what I think you are, it wouldn't keep stuff out of the teeth.

Got pictures of that you are thinking about?

maybe a dumb suggestion, but have you considered making boots out of leather or some other "period corrrect" type of material?

and no, i don't have any more of a description than that to offer:eek:

Shoot us a pic maybe together we could come up with something. Do the teeth lay upwards, towards the back front or down?

Nice build! I just read through the whole thing. :)

That's what I was thinking. A lot of older cars used leather to keep the grease around the springs.

You can also use a rack that has the ball joints in the middle.

I'm not exactly sure how you would do this but what about stiff bristles like a brush inside a boot like I was saying earlier. You could brush any debris out of the teeth. Just a thought.
